I really struggle with abstract. I also think I am in a photography slump, generally speaking. Anyway, I submit a shot from today, cropped and converted to b/w. any help at all is appreciated!!

Hi Marianne I like your shot but think the inclusion of the stalk gives away that this is a vegetable squash of some sort, so does not really fit the abstract category IMO. Maybe try without that, focusing more on the lines and textures of the skin. If you can include some nobbly skin textures if there are any, I would think that would help. I like your composition though, very nice.

Hi Marianne,

I really like your shot. There are so many different opinions on abstract... when you view some of the sites showing abstract shots, many of them we do know what they are.
I think for the assignment, it may be better to go with something that we cannot recognize immediately.

To me, your shot looks like a pumpkin. Perhaps, as Shirley said, you could try this again without the stalk (or another vegetable), and aim more for lines, texture, etc.

I agree with above and would also encourage you to experiment with pushing the processing over the top and see what you get.

OK, Shirley, Kaye and Bambe, how is this for pushing the processing? I think I have to do some research on abstarct photography!!
