Fired off a few shots this morning of a Thrush singing his head off in my neighbours garden (shot through the near shrub, hence some very blurred items) . I've posted 3 for comment, the rest I've dumped. these taken with Sigma 70-300mm which I'm only trying to learn its proper use.(the clear blue sky revealed a dust spot on the sensor).

Some nice shots there Eddie, Perhaps if you crop a little closer to the bird as it is a little lost in all the branches but nice and clear on the bird. The first one of him singing is great.

yeah I agree, the first one of him singing his little heart out looks great.

maybe a little crop and some cloning with the stamp tool to remove the "smudginess" effect. Is that even a word!

Anyway you get my gist.

well done ed.

regards
John

PS: Hi Ed, I took the liberty of making a small edit just to show as an example. It's what I would do, i'm sure not everyone would like but just my penny's worth.

all the best.

Eddie - I like the second one as well, but like Andy said, zoom closer so you get more of the bird. Unfortunately, when trying to take pictures of animals that move quick, it's easier said than done.

I, too, like the one where he's singing. I can almost hear him. Gotta get TIGHT, though. Critter shots are the reason I got this Oly with the 18x. Even that isn't quite close enough. That's why I got the 1.7 teleconverter. Now, I actually have to back off a little on the zoom but, it's there if I need it. And, I will this summer for wasp & bee shots (Andy's buddies... heheh)

Smudginess.. heh I like it.

Thanks everyone for your comments so far, guess what, while getting camera ready for going to London, I noticed that the exposure meter was showing ev adjustment so that might explain why I got some dark shots today(see my query under Lenses), must have tripped same by accident, shows I need to be more alert to all the settings. Off to London tomorrow, might get some shots.

Trust me, If a wasp came anywhere near me, even image stablisation would not help as I would move that fast, the photo would be very blurred.

Indeed I DO, Eddie! The missus & I lived in Rickmansworth and frequented many of the local establishments in the area. The Criketer was one we made it a point of stopping at on the way back from Watford.

Gary, what a small world, you in USA and me in Ireland talking about a pub in England. Unfortunately I did not get a change to get any photo's but will be back over in April as my daughter is getting married in St.Albans, so there'll be a right ol'Irish hooley and a chance to get some shots in that area.

Ain't it, though?! Our old landlord lived it St. Albans but he's moved since then to... uh... I forget at the moment. Plenty of stuff for shooting there.

It is surprising in our great big world how many times our paths cross with other people we know or who have very similar interests to ourselves etc. You would think there were only a few people in the world.

I see what you mean Andy, I used to think that Ireland was a small place but it's amazing that Gary, who's on the course and shares our common interest, has been in some of the places I'm now seeing in the London Area, because our daughter has worked in London for over 10years now and is now marrying a lad from Watford. Indeed the world is getting smaller, much more so since the expansion of broadband etc.

Yes I agree! I also think that it is very cool that we can share photos of the places we live at, and share with each other. Some people may not ever be able to travel, so this will let us "travel" to these places even it we can't! I love photos from Andy because I have always wanted to go there!

You know, Susan, this is so true...I'll never travel to the UK or to London or even Canada, for that matter, so you all can be my travel guide. I don't think there is much to shoot in rural northwest Missouri but to someone that has never been here, what I do shoot might be really interesting to them. Such as my snow pictures for Gary...he hates the snow and I know it just really makes him want to come here for a visit...:D:D:D

Seriously...you have made a good suggestion for photos...we take and share our surroundings with others who will never see them in person. And who knows...some day, I might get to go to one of these places and they will look familiar cause I saw it all first right here. :)

Thanks Sue. I love looking at the pictures of places where people live. I especially love the picures you guys take with the snow. As you know, we don't get much here and I really miss it. So, keep on taking those snaps. Perhaps the topic for next weeks weekly photo could be something along the lines of - take a picture of where you live which sums up your area. If you understand what I mean.

Winter... its nice, but I am fed up with all the snow. Here are a few pics of this morning... where we received another 10 inches. There was a lot of ice in with the snow today, so much ice that I damaged the snow blower.

Off to the store to replace a couple of parts and get that back up running again. I have a feeling it is going to be needed some more before the warm skies come back. :)

So you like snow, yes?

How about waking up to almost 1 foot of snow that with the wind builds up to 3 foot snow drifts? (lol)

Hello all -

Somehow, I missed where the thread started going in the direction of travel. Mary, I never thought there was a lot to photograph in MN, but since getting this camera, I look at everything with new eyes and start looking at local maps and places of interest. While I'll probably never get overseas (there's too much to see here), I too enjoy seeing the pictures from Andy and those across the sea.

BTW Jerry - where is this at??? I heard about snow on the east coast this morning, but not sure where.

I love the Snow Jerry, we just dont get much of it here. Perhaps if we were inundated like some places, I would not like it as much. I think, when it snows it makes everywhere look sooo clean and bright. It makes things beautiful. However, the downside to snow is that normal life has to go on and it makes things so much more difficult.
