You're waaaaaaaaaaaaay beyond where I'm at in photography. I just started about 8 months ago. But, I'm having fun with it. I have no intention of "going pro" or selling anything. Just a whacked-out old coot with a coupla cameras. :) Very nice website, BTW.
I just had a look at your gallery, you have some really good shots in there. Love the leaf on black velvet, totally hot. I'm still very much an amateur and think going pro would ruin the pure fun of it all. I have acutally sold a few photos and that is kind of neat i must admit. But to do things like school portraits or weddings, nope, not for me.

After looking at some of your stuff, I consider that quite a compliment. Thanks!

Amen, brutha! I did that with my guitar and it took the joy out of it. I did that with computers and it made it WORK (yuk). I'm NOT going to do that with photography. This is for ME!

Can I get a witness?!?!? Spot on!
Too weird, I am in IT also. I was a pastry chef for 20 years but began to have respiratory problems from breathing in all the flour and other junk that is airborn in a bakeshop. So since I loved computers I changed careers. Did not take long for that to just become work too.

John, I've browsed your website for almost 30 minutes now and I'm in awe....and your subjects are right up my alley. I love barns, old cars/trucks, forgotten houses, etc...and love to photograph them but...and this is a big BUT...I take photos of them, you, on the other hand, make them art...Lovely! I hope to be able to do that too but don't believe I have the eye that you have. Thanks for sharing a link to your website..its now in my bookmarks..
Mary
thanks Mary and Debbie for your comments.
Mary I have seen your gallery images and they are certainly nothing to sneeze at. You have a mighty darn good eye too.

Thanks, John..I just wish my eye would transpose to my images...I 'see' what I think is beautiful but can't seem to capture it on paper. I keep trying through....

Great site John, How do you create the photos where you have a photo in a photo but the one in the background is blured. Is this done in a particular program?

Wow, that is one fantastic web site. There are some amazing photo's in there. As far as I am concerned you should be very proud of them. I have just spent the best part of an hour looking through them, hopefully I may get some inspiration from them.

Proz your web site and your photos are wonderful. I love the deep colors in your photos. I really like the portrait of the older man with the blue ball cap on that says "New York" on it - G R E A T! I hope one day to be able to do photos even half as good!

Snappers, I use Adobe Photoshop for my photo editing. effects like that are really quite simple, just a matter of using layers and some blur and layer styles.
Thank you everybody for your comments.

Photoshop does that easily enough. It's just a series of layers, one blurred, and one not. It can even be the same picture with the top layer desaturated, lightly blurred and a 2nd layer underneath with a frame or scene box, or like a section "painted in" that has colour and no blur. All quite basic.

May be quite basic Jerry, but for those of us who do not have a great grasp of Photoshop etc, then it is far from Basic!
I'll have a play and see if I can get my head around it.

Tons of info sources... for example, selective colour in Photoshop... how about a video tutorial?
Check it out here:

3 minutes, 42 seconds to not just learn how to do it, but get at least a dozen ideas on where to use it. ;)
