Hi all! I just came across this website and thought it was a great tool for 'envisioning' the focal length of different lenses. I'm adding it to my bookmarks along with the site that Gary shared on the triangle of ss, ap, and iso. Both sites really help me understand these dslr much better.

Very cool Mary - I think somewhere I have a link for the Canon lens and specs, which is all greek to me. It's amazing the links I've collected and forget to go back to. This will be another one for my collection.

Me? I'm just dreaming of that 1200mm lens....wow...would that be a cool lens or what! I'm sure it would probably set me back almost the price of my mortgage! I wish I could 'do over' my purchase of my dslr...not that I'm unhappy with my Sony, I'm not but I am kicking myself in the butt for buying the two lenses that I did...I should have just waited till I knew more about lenses and then bought the second one. I like my 18-70mm kit lens...its not a fast lens but it gets what I want most of the time and the 75-300mm isn't bad but I'd love to have a fast zoom. Someday, I will upgrade but not any time soon.

Thanks Mary. I have just brought a Macro lens and a 400mm lens, but I am not sure I made the right decision. Still, at least I can look at this site now before buying my next lens.

I'm going to be shopping for a macro lens soon, I hope. Just can't afford one right now but its been added to my ever growing want list...my hubby just keeps shaking his head...:D
I'd love to have a 400 or 500 mm lens as I love to take wildlife photos and my 300 just doesn't get me close enough.

I had my Macro lens and 400mm lens from ebay as a job lot. They cost £80 which I thought was a bargin. I have to manually focus with both and use the apature ring on the lens rather than setting this in the camera but that's not a problem.
I am not overly impressed with the 400mm lens though. This may well be going back on ebay soon but I will take some comparison shots with my 300mm to my 400mm and see what the difference is.
If I were you and you already have a 300mm lens, I would go for either a teleconverter or if you can afford a 500mm lens as the 400 does not seem to give you much more.

So, I guess I need my personal shopper to look up a teleconverter for me too....I sure hope you and Gary don't have any trouble splitting his commission...how do you divide 0?

So...did you send that by snail mail? It will probably never get here cause the weather is WAY too cold for snails...:D:D
Explain this to me...I think I understand but not sure..
The 2X doubles the focal length of the master lens and makes the lens two f-stops slower.
Does this mean that with my 75-300mm, it would have a lower f-stop of 11 instead of 5.6? It's all so Greek to me but it sounds great and the prices aren't bad either...I could up my 300 to 500 and that would be awesome. :):)

Actually, you LOSE an f/stop with a teleconverter but you GAIN the advantage of a closer/tighter shot without using digital zoom (if DSLRs have digital zoom - dunno). Peter would know fer sher.

I have heard reports that the 2x converters are not as good as the 1.4x I think this is becasue you loose more f-stops with the 2x so the picture is affected slightly but with the 1.4x it is not very noticable.
I am still looking into this myself. I am temepted to go for the 1.4x but would like the 2x. It would be interesting if anyone has already got either of these, to give their opinion as to which is the better.

I get so confused sometimes when it comes to the really technical information!

I have a 1.4x that I use with my nikon 70 to 210 lens. I have had reasonable luck with this combination. With any converter the camera may have difficulty with focus. I have a 2x of a much older ventage. I used it with my film cameras and was very dissapointed. I will save my money to buy a lens before I will spend the money for a 2x converter. That will be a while as I want to master what I have first.

I think it's a matter of camera/converter combination, Andy. For instance, the 2x teleconverter I got for my Canon works great and it's a no-name, cheapie. However, the 2x I got from the same place for my Oly was garbage and I promptly let them know it and got a refund. As luck would have it, I got a 1.7X B-300 made by Olympus off of eBay for LESS than the 2x and it works GREAT. I guess you buy and try. Just be sure you can get a refund if it doesn't work.

Yes Gary you are right I think. It very much depends on the combination.
