This week the topic is macro. I know not everyone has macro , but just get as close as you can with what you have available. Here is some info you can read about macro -

I love this photo! I look at the date and then every little scratch on it, and it makes me wonder what stories it has to tell us. How many different places it went! The thoughts are endless with this photo!

Here's Mine. Well Two actually, hope you dont mind.
Both are taken today in my garden. I saw this crocus and could not resist the temptation to capture the moment spring started. (Well one can hope) The sun was shining and so I made the most of it. I gave my neighbour quite a shock as she thought I had collapsed on the floor but I was just lying there taking photos :D:D

The first is my shot for the week but the second on I thought I would post too as it appealed to me, the settings on the camera were lowered and this is how it came out. It looks like there is a glow within the flower.

A note for Gary here...... I tried to upload the photo using a direct link from my album using the image tag bit but for some reason it just put the html code there, how do you link to yours in your galery? I know you have said it before to someone but I could not remember how.

From the Gallery, copy the "Direct Link Code" to the clipboard (Control C), open the reply dialog and, when you want to insert the image, click the little icon in the top tool bar that looks like a mountain with a sun. Paste the code in and click ok.

Looks like it worked in your moon shot, didn't it?

No. I had to play about with the HTML code to get it to work. I changed the < at the start and end of the the link to and then it displayed it correctly. For example I will post here a link to my moon shot which is a direct link from my gallery.....
<img src="http://www.proudphotography.com/forum/gallery/files/7/4/8/moon.jpg" alt="Moon Resting" />

As you can see, it just puts the HTML code there, but If I replace the <img src=" with and everything after .jpg with then it displays correctly.

Admin any ideas?

That's what that little button does, Andy. You paste in the URL and it supplies the rest. Don't click the little LINK button, Click the one between the "Insert email link" and the "Wrap ... " buttons.

These are all wonderful shots.

Gary - love the detail in the coin and the stories it would tell.
Andy - I'm jealous - I probably won't see flowers in my yard until July.
Joseph - Does your daughter play in the water with you? And I love the lily. I'm almost positive it didn't come from your garden recently.
Sue - It looks like you can almost reach out and start eating M&M's. Now if they were almond M&M's, I'd be giving it my best shot.
Andy - Looks the moon is just sitting on this jet line - great catch.

Now this was a great thing to come home to...you make me blush, Joseph, but I thank you very much for the compliment. I was about to give up this morning..I just couldn't get it focused sharp and the color right too. I even switched back to the automatic macro setting on my camera and it was even worse. It finally dawned on me that I was trying to shoot it at 1.7 and it was just not stopped down enough to get a good focus. I stopped down to 5.6 and it came out so much better. I was happy then. I was shooting on my tripod, using my 10 second timer and using only window light from a north window. I'd like to be able to got some reflection in the water drop but the light wasn't that good. I placed a piece of black foam board behind the flowers and that helped with the background. Someday, it will be hanging on my wall. Thanks again.

hi guys thought i would have a go at macro

Sophiesue, I like your macro. The colors are good. I especially like how the peddels at the top of the photo that come towards the camera are out of focus. It gives the flower depth. I like that. I would have like to see the center of the flower in complete focus though. It seems like only a small portion of the center is in focus. But stopping down the apature may have brought the top peddels in too much focus. I don't know. Very nice photo.

Hi Sandra.

I just got the lens maybe a few months ago, so besides some of the macros in my gallery, I haven't used it much. But it's new, and the snow here is deep. If it even gets nice again in Mn I will be using it a lot outside. It is a wonderful lens. I did a lot of reading about the lens before I bought it, and it seems to be a true staple to the Canon macro shooter. And at 100mmm, it is a great portrait lens too.

You could have used a drinking glass...:D and I thought I got great results out of my 50 mm lens too...but it doesn't keep me from 'wanting' a macro lens. My friend just ordered a 100mm macro lens and I'm so jealous but can't wait to see her photos. :)

How soon you forget...are you as old as me? :D
Remember when I shared the photo of the Medieval Times dinner theater and I said it was my first time using the dslr and I had to use a real slow shutter speed and I didn't have a tripod so I used my drinking glass? :D Trust me...I need to learn a lot more about my own equipment before I invest in any more lenses but it doesn't keep me from wanting...just paying for it keeps me from ordering..:D

That's one of the pluses to my Sony...image stabilization is built into the camera so our lenses don't have to have it. Has saved my butt many times cause I'm not the steadiest person. I just keep forgetting to turn it off when I use the tripod and it makes it worse if you leave it on. And then, if I turn it off then I forget to turn it back on when I take pictures off the tripod..:D

Ok... it's cold here and nature pics are out, so how about if I suggest this:

An item inside your home that is from another country or representative of another country. An example would be if you were from the USA, a picture of a bottle of irish whiskey representing "Ireland" ... ok thats a weak example but you get what I am trying to say. Extra credits for originality! :D

This is a very good shot.

Color, makes it twice that. This shot deserves to be in color.

This is what I think, me only.

What I like:
Color.
Contrast.
That deap blue is always great.
great composition on the subject.
Shadows are perfect.
PERFECT DOF.

I truly feel this is a photo that can make some money pieinyourgilles, with a little pp.

I think dkippen and Snappers asking for a color, was spot on. The B&W was ok, but no where near the impact color has on this shot. I don't think the B&W has the right shades. You NEVER go wrong with THAT sky color, and with the the warm subject to balance it off, makes it great eye candy. GREAT WB.

I think the angles can be better. With the composition as it is, I stand at an angle to view it. The composition, I think, would be better with the viewfinder level with the horison(sp). Can you adjust the level, and repost?

I will try to follow up with a couple more when I have time in the next week or so. Will probably post thread to "Macro" section. BUT, nothing will beat your beautiful macro droplets - I love them!

Thanks Mary. Please be truthful though and tell me ways I can improve. I am not all that happy with the last one. The focus is good on part of the stamen but not other parts.

Kaye, I don't know but it looks like you have changed the aperture on the images. Notice how the first one is clear all the way through, even the background. Then on the second one, the background is black..did you put something behind it? On the one that you sent by itself, it looks like you had the lens wide open and it had a very, very shallow dof. Thus, part of the stamen is sharp and part of it isn't. To fix this, you would have had to open it up a stop or two. Can you get the meta file information for each photo? See what the f/stop was for each one and that should help you understand why one is clear and one isn't.

Thanks for your help Mary.
My first shots (2), as you say, one is clear all the way thru. The second one I purposely made the background black on photoshop to add to my "Black background contrasts" from which I will make a film clip for our site.
Therefore, from my first post & second post, there are only 2 original photos. I will attach originals so you can see. I did take them under some sort of neon light which made it harder.

Both of these shots were on the same settings; F-stop: f/4 ISO:100. (I do not know if this is good or bad)...

Sorry Mary, as I (bit like Treetop) do not always understand the terminology: By shallow dof, I guess you are referring to F-Stop settings... ?
This was shot from my new basic Olympus camera - I do not think I have control to change F-Stop on this small camera. I know I can change other settings eg ISO. You probably know more than me on these small cameras.

Shallow Depth of Field means that you have blur in your background. A wide (deep) depth of field means that most everything is sharp in your images. To get really sharp landscape shots, you would use a small f/stop...like 22, 32, etc...to blur the background and draw attention to your subject, you would open your lens...to a larger f/stop, such as f2.8, f3.5, f4 etc....Also the closer you are to your subject, the more will be in focus. If you moved back from your subject at f4, the background would be more blurred than if you moved up closer.
I think I'm explaining this right and hope Jerry will correct me if I didn't.
If you look in your manual, it will give you the f/stops your camera can use. Usually f8 is about as small as a compact will go, so shooting super sharp landscapes would be out of the question. But, most compacts can go as high (wide) as f 1.4. So they are great for macro shots.

Thank you so much Mary. I am going to save the info you gave me for future reference.

My Olympus FE-370 & F-Stop: I again checked in my user manual as I do often, and I cannot find anything about F-Stop settings.
I then googled and found the following - which basically says that F-Stop on this camera ranges from 3.5 to 5.6, but I think it must be automatically done.
My macros seem to take on F/4 and full zoom changes to around F/5.6.

Anyway, not to worry, I will keep trying with this until I can update to something better. By then, I may have learned more.

PS Richard (my partner came home today - seems quite well - just a bit more mending needed). But overall he is fine.

Kind regards,
Kaye

Wonderful news! I'm glad he is home and on the way back to good health.

I think your camera will still serve you well. You can always learn on it and then upgrade in the future if/when you want to do more with your photography.

Thanks Mary, I agree, I will probably upgrade again within the next year. At present I will do the best I can.

Kaye - very cool capture. It's interesting what is more clear in a macro mode.

Thanks Debbie.
I love macro and am surprised to see what we do not see with our own eyes.
I do need a more sophisticated camera, but must wait for now.
I will keep pacticing with current camera, but would like to update a little later in the year, depending upon finances.
Thank you.
