OK, Here we go. This one may take some thinking about and maybe it wont. After having a look through the internet, I saw a topic on another forum from some time ago entitled shadows.
The idea is to take a picture where the shadow makes the picture work. It does not have to be primarily of a shadow but the best use of shadows creatively.
Have fun.:)

Oh wow, a very challenging topic... I like!
Edit: Ok I had to try out a preliminary entry and will likely try something more a bit later. What bigger shadows can one use than the earth's shadow of the moon? Sorry, when shadows were mentioned, the recent eclipse was the first thing that popped into my head. I will try to do better in my next post here. :)

What a great competition we got going here... Would you mind if I moved it into the "Competitions & Challenges Category" on top of the homepage?

No we wouldn't mind at all. We are thankful that you are letting us do this, since we just started it on our own! We hope you don't mind! I however, cannot find the competitions and challenges section.
I will post mine here for now, and then I will move it, when I find it. This is a shot I have been wanting to try for some time, and now I had a reason! I wanted the antique look.

Competitions & Challenges section is on the very top of the PP forum. You don't need to move or do anything, all the posts and photos have been moved there. It's better organized and easier to find.

Really nice idea with the rings! I've seen the standing ring heart effect before, but it was interesting to see that a ring lying on it's side does the same effect.
Stunningly beautiful and really well done.
BTW, the new location is nice... more logical than where we kinda started out in.

First off, thank you very much to our wonderful administrator for giving us a Home for our weekly topics. It's great and so much easier to find them.
All the shadow pictures have been great so far...I love Jerry's moon shadows...you are correct, what greater shadow then our great earth. And Debbie, the one with the flower shadow on the ground is too cool...love it! Now, to Sue....that is one awesome photo....totally cool and an absolutely perfect example of love in shadows....
You guys think so much better than I think...its going to be real hard to top any of these but I'll give it a shot..

Ok, here is a quick one but I like this topic so well I'm hoping you all don't mind if I play a bit more and submit another one later. This one was done earlier when my friend and I were practicing some shots.

Excellent work Everyone. Some great shots here. Debbie, I love your shot of the shadow in the snow. It really encompases the topic of the shadow making the picture.
Jerry, I too love the moon shots, I just wish our sky was so clear on the night so I could have gotten some nice shots but never mind, I'll have to wait a few more years now.
Mary, I love the refelction in your shadows, The sparkle from the glass adds great interest into the shot.
And sue, Well what can I say, Great minds think alike, you will see why when I post my picture!
Admin, thanks for giving us our own section for use for this weekly topic, it is great fun and gets us all thinking and using our cameras in places where we may not normally use them.

Wow what cool ideas everybody is coming up with.
Jerry - the moon photos are just out of this world (haha)! Actually , they are so interesting to me, and I want to figure out how to take great moon photos like that. This inspires me to try.
Debbie - I really like BOTH of your photos, but the shadow with the flower is my favorite. I think the shadow of that flower is really cool.
Mary - I love your photo. I love photos that have "objects" in them, as you can probably tell by all of mine...example - toothpaste, colored pencils, strawberry, m&ms, and on and on. I love the color in the candies.
Lornem - that is a really nice photo. It looks very mysterious to me, and I can think of many stories that it might tell.
Ok a little info about my photo - it is NOTHING original like the photos that everybody is putting up here, but that is what I have been wanting to try for a long time now. I could not get my husbands ring to stand up, and thought it was really interesting that it did the same effect laying down. I wanted to put it on a page of the bible that had a marriage saying, but I didn't. I might try that at a later date though. I can't wait to see what others post now! This is a really fun photo shot!

Well, Sue, Like I said, Great minds think alike. I too have been wanting to try this shot for a while and when I thought of this topic I had this picture in mind. I hope you dont mind me being a little bit of a copycat! I did however take my pictures this afternoon before I saw yours. :)
My idea was to take the passage from the bible which is used at most Wedding services and have the ring with the heart shadow in the spine.
DOF was deliberatly low to try and focus the eyes on the Love passage part.
Love is Patient, Love is Kind.

Andy this is so cool. Did you see what I typed up above? I was going to put it in a bible with a marriage verse but decided against it last night, so that worked out for both of us, because they are each a little different. I don't think your a copy cat at all. I just think we were both intrigued by this type of shadow! Great job...I really, really like it.

Thanks sue. I did read what you had put but I was was posting my post as you posted yours so it didnt come up until after I had posted. LOL.
It is amazing how shadows can change shape and not look like the real thing! No wonder we got so scared by shadows when we were younger!:D

Thank you everyone for the great comments.
Sue and Andy - I love your ring shots. This is something I never would have thought of. Both show a great sense of emotion.
Mary - what kind of candies did you use?? Looks like some peanut M&Ms. Very creative,
Lornem - very eerie and mysterious.

Andy I know what you mean about when kids are little and being afraid of the shadows! Look how they can actually form into something! Funny.

Lens Baby you stole my idea. I too was delighted to see the effect of the ring lying down. I only ever used the ring standing up. Looks neat with the engagement ring as well. Lovely shot.
Back to the drawing board for me.

There are some wonderful submissions here.
Sue and Andy, those are both very clever shots. Would never even dawned on me to try that, let alone get a heart shape out of them. Wonder who first placed their ring on a book and saw the shadow of a heart? Wonder if they did it on purpose or were just sitting there and noticed it? Interesting...
I've spent all week looking at shadows...:) Not only does this topic provoke interesting photos, it gets you to look at your surroundings differently and see them as beauty instead of just a shadow. Great topic...I'm going to try for some more on Saturday.

Forgot to answer your question, Debbie. The candy is fruit things..like sours only not sour, they taste like fruit. Its a hard candy and I have no idea why I even had it on hand..must have put it in some craft thing I made...:D
The green glass is an air freshener.

Way cool - now that you mention the candy, I think I have seen those. It's not chocolate, so I don't really give it a second look.

Mine is a flop this week - did not have alot time and the idea i had also did not work out as planned because of time! i was planning on getting my husband to strike a pose in such a way that his shadow would look like a monster - to do with our imaginations as children-everything was spooky back then! anyway...i will work it again some other time - when i have more time!

Great idea Janine.
The idea of these weekly topic is that the topic will stay there and people can add to them as and when they want to. So plenty of time left to have a go at it.

I've got one more picture I took with shadow and will post it too...and then we need someone else to step up and give us a new topic...anyone want to do that?

Thanks, Debbie...those q's are hard to come by...the idea is to photograph the alphabet in ordinary things...I had a blast this weekend doing just that. It was in the 60's on Sat. and 70's on Sunday and I spent most of it outside with my camera. I meant to redo my lesson 4 assignment but it was too windy for that. How was your photographic weekend? Did you take tons of photos? And, did you have a good time?
dkippen
03-04-2008, 02:42 AM
The railing creates a wonderful effect.
Well - since you asked, I had a very good time. For the most part, other than windy, the weather cooperated. Sunday was overcast and a little gray. I took over 500 pictures for the weekend. The frosting on the cake was this morning when my travel companion and I were able to get to "The Witch Tree" on the Grand Portage Indian Reservation, which is VERY sacred ground for Native Americans. There is a path for "tourists" to take that goes to a viewing platform about 300 yds away, but the guide took us right down to the tree. And then on the way home, we came across about 10-15 immature eagles feasting on a deer carcass. I was also able to retake my winter Split Rock Lighthouse reflection.
And because I missed all of you so very much and wanted to see what's going on, I haven't even looked at my pictures.

Ok, I was rushed and late... but here is my entry into shadows.
Sheesh, if I keep taking pics at the oratory, everyone here is going to think that all I do is religious pics... lol.
I promise to go somewhere totally different for next week's challenge, its just that I was in the area and with my niece, so we dropped in and I snapped a few away. It always has some great atmosphere.
Anyways, here it is:
