Hey, Im Carlene, and very new to this....having a hard time with some things...any help would be great. I just started a few days ago and I am on the 3rd chapter, assignment 3. Not too sure on this panning effect, seems like Im not doing something right. I bought a fuji S700, 10x optical f=6.3-63mm, 1:3.5-3.7, 46mm. As of yet I have no idea what all this means, so if anyone out there has any time to help me, Id sure appreciate it!!!

Nice camera! :)
Don't worry too much about all the stuff that's tattooed all over the camera. You SHOULD have learned about shutter speed. If not, read it again until you're absolutely sure you know what it means. It is 1 part of "the triangle". Don't rush the course. Otherwise, you'll have wasted your money.
Welcome to the forums.

Hi Carlene, welcome to the club.
Don't stress yourself about the course, it is supposed to be fun. The best way to learn is to take things in small manageable chunks and as you get more comfortable with things, put the parts of the puzzle (all those little chunks), together.
The panning module is one of the more challenging assignments of the course and even for people who are experienced, this is a technique that requires a lot of time and practice to get right.
There is no reason to feel rushed either. You can take one day to practice panning for an hour while in a city or town or six months, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that you understand what you are doing and most of all that you are having fun.

Hi Carlene and Donna,
Welcome to the course. As for the panning lesson, I think most if not all who have gone before you have had problems with this lesson. It is very difficult to do at first. Try to stand a little way back from the cars and follow the movement from your hips keeping your feet still. As you press the shutter make sure you still follow the car at the same speed. Practice is the main element here. It does take some getting used to so stick with it. I'm sure you will get there in the end.

Hey Carlene, Welcome to the forum... I started the course about 2 weeks ago and I still haven't handed in the first assignment! :o...
Anyways, don't get frustrated over it... I think it'll help if you'll move a little further away from the car and put the camera on a tripod...It should be easier than handheld shots... Just keep trying... upload your best shot so we can have a look...
G'luck!

Carlene - welcome to the group. Like everyone else says, it just takes practice and you'll get it.

Welcome, Im a rusher and want to know and understand everything so quickly, I just want to learn. I am up to the panning/shutter speed thing to and will hopefully go somewhere on the weekend to try this. I am re-reading my notes to try and get it to sink in and it will in time - I have to learn to SLOW DOWN. Hope you get some good results!

Welcome to the forum, Donna and Carlene. Don't feel stressed about the assignment...its to do for fun and a great way to learn about shutter speeds. I actually sat in my car and did my panning. The trick is to get your focus locked on the thing you are panning and just to follow it...like you would if you had a pair of binoculars and were following a deer running across a field. The only difference being you would press the shutter button down at the beginning. I read in Bryan Peterson's' book on Shutter speeds that to get a really interesting panning photo, you should find something with a real colorful background. That way the subject you are panning stands out and the motion effect is colorful.
But, most of all, have fun with it!

There is a section for discussing the course lessons and modules here on the forum. I am not sure if people who do not take the course have access to it or not, but definately those that are having issues and need a word or 2 from other course attendees, can ask in those parts of the forum dedicated to that topic.
