I really enjoy doing portraits but I'm not that great at them. Advice on these pictures and what to do in the future is very appreciated :)

They both look great to me, Rebecca. I'm not real good at portraits, so I'm not a good critic. I think the secret is to keep practicing...and keep shooting. You'll get it!

Yes the second one has my thumbs up.
I was given to believe that square on portraits are never flattering and makes the person look larger. I am not even that far into the course, so I shall wait and see what my portrait shots will be like.

The golden rule of all rules is that... rules are made to be broken... lol.

There are times when the suggestions of rules are good to follow, though. You do not want square patterns on someone that has (how can I say this delicately) a weight issue. However that same scenario with someone of "supermodel" proportions, it does just the right thing. In both cases, it makes them look a little larger... depending on angles, lights and position of course.

Yes I agree with you Jerryph and I am a great believer that rules are made to be broken.
It is one of my absolute pleasures to do this constantly and it sure gets me into trouble a lot of times.
