Just a pic of some flowers that overhang a bank. I hope i loaded the pic right i tried doing it different this time. Its not the best one but i like how the background is black so its a nice contrast.

What are you shooting with, C?

Have you read any of the popular books out? Can I recommend Scott Kelby's two volumes of "The Digital Photography Book"? The course here will also help you out immensely. You are taking it, right?

If you want a black background on a subject, don't rely on shade or shadow. PUT a black background there... black posterboard or velvet (my two preferences) In bright sunlight (as you have shot here) use the posterboard. Velvet shows almost white because it reflects so much light. In PP, use the fill function to fill the posterboard areas to true black because, in bright sunlight, the black posterboard will appear grey. Just some observations I've picked up in the last week or so. The original idea is from the Kelby books.

I've enhanced this just a tad by filling all the shaded areas with true black, popping up the green a little, and a little USM. See what you think.

I am using a Canon Digital Rebel XTi, I am taking the course but im only on the 4th lesson this shot was before the course. and i will have to invest in something for a background but i dont have really much to take pictures of except for flowers like this that grow naturally sadly i dont have a garden of my own yet lol. When you retouched the photo it did make an interesting difference but the background doesnt look as good but the colors do stand out better. Thanks for the advice I appreciate it. I noticed in one of your other posts that you live in Ky I live in Tn around Fort Campbell Ky just thought it was kinda interesting lol. but thanks for the comments.

Clarksville, right? :)

You don't have to do anything fancy to make a background, C. A black cloth works just fine.

Do you have a tripod? They help to get a good sharp picture. Doesn't have to be expensive but, it should be stable.. rock-solid. You don't need your own garden, either. Shoot someone else's! Or, go to Kroger's and take your camera... heheh. Wildflowers. The possibilities are endless.

ya know thinking about it i have some black fur idk if it is too shabby but hey im gonna try it sometime when i get some time. and yes i do have a tri pod just never use it i just use freehand bc its easier but i do gotta use it more often it would result in better pics. i thought about going to wal mart and taking pics of the flowers once but i didnt know if i would get in trouble or not and i have 2 little ones and no husband here so it would be hard to have the time to do that anyways. but thanks for the info i am gonna try that black fur sometime soon.
