I need to know how much different CS3 is from CS2. I have to buy it for school, and I already have CS2, so I want to know if I am going to have to learn a lot of new techniques with the CS3. Anybody have any comments?

Sue - I'm still using CS2 and for my current use, I don't see a need to upgrade. It does look like CS3 functions better and is faster if running on a MAC. I came across a couple of forums from when CS3 was introduced and the reasons to upgrade were not that important. Things may have changed since the release last August. For the most part, though, if you're already using and are familiar with CS2, I wouldn't think there would be huge learning curve. Let me know what you think after you've used it awhile.

OK I will let you know. I have to buy it because it is required. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to be totally messed up. This MAC is keeping me confused enough. (But in a good way because I am already addicted to it) lol

Hi Sue...I have not upgraded to CS3, am content right now with CS2 but one of the reasons I would like to upgrade is the B/W adjustment option. I love B/W but have trouble getting it where I like it and with CS3 they now have the adjustment option for B/W so you can control the tones with the color channels. That is one of the best features of the upgrade, in my opinion but not enough to justify upgrading yet. I'll wait till the next upgrade comes out and get the CS3 cheaper.

Let us know how you like your upgrade.

Unless you are wanting the very latest features, I know professionals that are doing wonderfully with CS2 and not wanting to upgrade. I own CS3, because I went from a $5 scratched destroyed CS2 original CD that I found in a garage sale and upgraded to CS3, so I am good in that sense. Had I found a usable version of CS2, I would be content with it.

For the average user, like Mary said, its not worth it in terms of cost vs what is new.

Jerry it is required that I purchase CS3 for school. I was just wondering how much of a difference there was between CS2 and CS3, because I know CS2 pretty good. I was worried for a moment! I wish I could use my CS2. I am buying it for my Mac anyway, so I will still have CS2 on my pc.

Jerry I have a question for you about that disc. Did they not license it yet? I was told that if I bought a copy of the CS3 off of ebay etc., that I cannot use it for school, because any art shows etc, they want the license number (if you used the CS3 on your photo) to make sure it is registered to you. Did you have to pay for the transfer of license?

I have used the trial and wow I love it. I like it much better than cs2. I never did buy cs3 because one of my classes said I could use 2 for now. I am going to buy 4 instead.

I finally upgraded to CS4, but unfortunately haven't had time to use it.

Oh I love it Debbie. It is great. I also switched to MAC and let me tell you...photoshop is sooo much better on Mac (for me that is) it is so nice compared to my PC version (CS2)

Sue - I wish I could go to MAC. I have some software that is not MAC compatible so I have to stick with PC, otherwise I would have gone with MAC when I bought the Dell earlier this year.

Wait till you try CS4... if you liked CS3 you will like CS4 even more. It is about twice the differences that CS2 -> CS3 was. I tested out the trail and am going to pick it up after the holidays.

My main reason:
"superior conversion quality as you process raw images with the industry-leading Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw 5 plug-in, which now offers localized corrections, post-crop vignetting, TIFF and JPEG processing, and support for more than 190 camera models."
----------------

One of those 190 new cameras supported is the D700! :D

Just switched to CS4 on Monday (skipped CS3 altogether). Already I'm a big fan of the changes to adjustment layers - and having a b&w adjustment layer is very nice. I'll have to see how it compares in RAW processing to my dedicated RAW converter
