I had a chance to visit a public pow-wow on the Khanawake reserve just outside Montreal today for a few hours. What a very interesting culture! I must have had 20 conversations with some very open native people, and I had a chance to photograph several dances as they were competing.
The sun was brutal today, very harsh and temperatures were in the 90's, yet they danced as if it was the most important thing in the world to do. One very interesting dance was the Smoke Dance that was open to all tribes and groups as a way to share the dance area together. Many good photo opportunities were there, but my favorites were the youngsters!
I had a great time and decided to go there next year again for a great time.
