This past weekend at the Slice of Shoreview Fair, I spent a great deal of time photographing events, and the ski competition. Took thousands of shots. I had many skiers come up to me and ask about the photos I was taking, and requested to see and purchase some. I already have some orders, and expect more.

I also put together a series of photos from the fair and submitted them to the local paper. I had 2 editors contact me and say these are the best photos they’ve seen submitted from the public, and there is a good chance they will make the paper. The editors asked me about freelance work, and if I was willing to work for hire when they needed someone. I was elated. Of course we are still talking, and this could be premature, but it looks pretty solid.

I’m on a cloud right now. And even if nothing pans out on this right now, I know that my work is at least good enough at this point to draw interest. Thank you PP and the members for the help you’ve given me.

Here are a few of the photos taken.

Thanks for listening.

Joseph

Excellent news Joseph. Some excellent shots there. What lens were you using for the ski shots, they look very close.

Great work.

Thanks so much :-)

I wasn't that close to the action, but used a Canon 100-400L mostly at the 400 focal. It's a very good lens. It's fairly new and think it needs a little dialing in that I might send it to canon some day with my camera and have them dial it in while it's under warrenty.

Congratulations Joseph. I know you must really be feeling good about your photos right now. The first photo on the first post is great. I love the composition. I am finding out that for me the composition is what catches my eye first. Let us know if you end up freelancing for that paper! That is so cool.

Thanks so much Sue. I was really surprised at the speed in which those two editors replyed to the emails I sent. They asked a lot of questions about my interest and what they had avalible. Mostly sports freelance. Of course it may be that I don't hear from them again, :-) I don't know. But I will keep you posted as to what happends. I think in the mean time I'm going to start going to more local event, doing my own thing and see if they bite on anything.

Thanks again.

Nice work Jerry and congrats. The more you can get your name out to the public the better chances you have for getting more work. I think more and more people are shooting on speculation, they cover an event and hope they can sell images from the event. Today, most papers and magazines have very few staff photographers and buy their photos from API or free lance. Keep it, you may have just found a nice little niche for yourself.

Thanks for all the positive comments everyone. I have yet to hear from them after our initial flurry of emails a few weeks ago, but that's ok. After this week I will be covering some events on my own, sending in what I have, and making sure they don't forget I'm here and determined. :-)

Question ... as you were approached by the people wanting to purchase them, how much did you sell them for? I would never know what a fair price is is someone was to ask me.

Thanks!
