My father-in-law celebrated his 90th birthday this past weekend. I
was invited to be the photographer. This is my first time doing
anything like this and I'm not sure I did the occasion justice but,
here's a link to the album. I think most came out so-so, with some
junk and some that are pretty good. As you can tell, it's in a church
gym so the lighting was mixed between natural and metal halide. I
*did* use a bounce flash on occasion.

90 years, thats a grand age to be! I bet you found it more of a challenge to hit those lighting conditions than it was to get those hawk pictures! :D

Churches indoors are always hard. You have a choice of motion blur or higher ISO noise without a flash, so it is all about compromises. I did see many images that were very good and captured the feeling of the event, thats the most important. That b-day cake was tastey looking!

Thanks for sharing, Gary.

More than you know! What a royal, screaming pain!

My main goal was to capture the feeling of the event. I wanted to keep everything spontaneous and candid. The group shot was not my idea and if I had my way, I would have certainly posed them a LOT differently instead of standing all stiff and with "cheesy" smiles.

Thanks for the comments, Jerry.

BTW, the cake WAS very good :)

Gary.. you have a lot of really nice photos in there. I really love some of the moments that you have captured. I love the photos of the conversation between your main subject, and the early teen boy. It really looks like the are having a serious conversation! You have captured some wonderful moments. Yes, that lighting is a killer, but you did it, and I think you were able to obtain some really nice photos of a very special moment. Nice job!

Thanks, Sue. I sure wouldn't want to make a living doing that stuff. Animals & flowers are MUCH more my line.

Yeah, thats how I felt about the weddings. Not my thing. I am more into advertising photography at this point. I am still just doing it for relaxation, and also school projects. So far that is about it.
