I was reading a review on the 70-300 IS and was pleased with the findings, seeing how that is my first lens purchase, however, two other things popped up in the review that I need to know about.

#1.What does the "Hood" do for you?

#2.What are "Tubes" and what do they do?

I'm absorbing info like a sponge, don't know if I'll ever be able to recall any of it tho.:D

Hi Dick,
A hood shields the lens from light flair. Most of the time you don't want flair on a lens. Sometimes we use flair on purpose such as I did with this image where you see the flair running in front of the church.

Extension tubes allows the lens to get closier to the subject and makes it bigger much like a macro lens. With extension tubes and macro lens you can get really close-up images that are larger than life.
