I see mention of this frequently but don't see a spec by that name,,,,,,,is this just a nickname and if so what is it representing? I assume its 50mm and it that is the case ,whats the true description.

Personnally I've never heard this term before, but a quick search on google says its a Nikon Nikkor 50mm Prime lens.
There seems to be a lot of forums talking about it.
With regards to specs, go to Nikon webiute they have specs of all there products

I beleive it's the canon 50mm 1.8. The reason it's so popular is it's very inexpensive, about $80.00, but has the quality of very expensive glass. I have one, but have yet to put it through it's paces.

Nikon or canon????
I'm guessing they both have their own version.

:oI wasn't critising your reply in any way, it was meant light-heartedly.
What do I know anyway, I've never even heard of a nifty fifty, just searched the internet to see what came up!

"nifty fifty" is just a nick name for the VERY affordable 50mm F/1.8 lenses that are made by both Nikon and Canon. I believe the Canon one is about $125-$150 and the Nikon ones are available for around $105 online. I have the Nikon one... its a very cheap built lens (mostly plastic), but its sharp, fast and a fun lens to play with.

No prob. :)

Seems prices have gone up a little on Amazon since I got mine:

Nikon 50mm F/1.8 (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-50mm-Nikkor-Digital-Cameras/dp/B00005LEN4/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1218820361&sr=8-1)

Canon 50mm F/1.8 (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50mm-1-8-Camera-Lens/dp/B00007E7JU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1218820443&sr=8-1)

This is one of those lenses that nearly everyone should have as part of their camera kit. ;)

You can thank me after you see how nice the pictures that lens puts out, are. The only concern that I recently read on another forum is that the 50's are rather cheaply built because of their very low price. Don't bounce it off the floor, and try to be more gentle than average when handling this lens compared to your other ones... lol

Seriously, I like my 50mm F/1.8.

Dick - you will really like that lens. Yes it is made a little cheap, but it is very light, and fun to use! I really get some great quality photos with mine. I was amazed that it was able to take photos that well.

Hey if it only lasts a year as a training tool its worth every penny.

I watched a 3 hour video on the 40D today learned a lot and got a lot more confused too. LOL

You can get pretty close, but no, you cannot do macro work with it.

I bought my nifty fifty in preparation for when my daughter was born so as I could take good potrait shots wothout flash in all conditions, especially indoors in low light. Although I only started to master using it after she was born, the lens is amazing. It is very cheap and gives amazing pictures even in low light. Unless you can afford the better Canon 50mm 1.4 lens, I would recommend this lens. Here is a picture of my daughter, using said lens:
