I'm using a Sony A200 and the 75/300m lens for these

If in manual:
- get the aperture as big as you can
- you may need to raise ISO (but I do not think so)

The above 2, to raise shutter speed. Sometimes 1/250th is not enough between the motion of the lens and the motion of the subject combined.

Change your angle. The position you choose could place you in the sun and them in the shade, which then silhouettes the players. Taking pics in mid day strong sun is always challenging anyways because of strong shadows.

One of the bigger challenges in these kinds of shots is focus. A fast focusing lens is a help, or if your camera has it, a "continual focus" mode gets you more pics in focus. Being able to anticipate happenings will also aid you in getting that special shot that you will want to mount on the wall.

Overall, really nice!

Can't help you here, I haven't graduated to action shots yet.

I take photos of rugby league as a hobby. I found that understanding the game and having a huge amount of patience helps. I use an Olympus E520 with a sports mode on it so it allows me to take continual shots.

The main thing I find is having a good zoom and the ability to get as close to the sideline as possible to get those shots. Also, I very rarely take photos on cloudy days, as most of my best shots are on sunny days.

Hope that helps.

wow old bump.

Since this post I have studied photography full time, worked as a photographer (sport, studio, scapes, weddings & other events) pretty much every second i get while not studying and do a lot of local aussie rules.
sacked the kit lens about a week after this post.
using now a 70-200 ƒ2.8, 2 a550's, my old a200 that pretty much has a 24-70 ƒ2.8 living on it & a 300 ƒ2.8 sony G lens.
