Nikon D80 question

Hey everyone I wanna toss a question to all of you. I have a Nikon D80 and am doing well with it however I have a problem. In auto mode which I rarely use,and in Aperture and Shutter Priority modes the camera never gets the exposure right rather way overexposed. I have went to my menu and hit "reset" and also held the 2 buttons on the camera with green dots till the screen flashed and no luck still.I have seen others shoot ok in these modes so I didn't just assume it is a camera issue and the camera is only 6 months old and cared for very well.Thanks if you all can give some assistance.

do you have anything set on the EV compensation plus or minus ,i sometimes forget on mine or do you have that??the othe suggestion is to see how its metering ??is it adjustable??can you double check with a light meter if you have one ??best i got with hints so far.
