I like these. I would like to see the first as just a B&W with good levels and see what it looks like. Composition wise, and balance I like the first one better. I also think it's a much more interesting capture. The second one I like also but there is so much dead space at the top that it doesn't seem balanced. My eye is being drawn to the dead space for some reason. Maybe a little cropping would help that one.

I like the first one better, due to the composition of the photo. The second photos composition is a little bit "off". Yes the dead space is a distraction, but also the subject going from side to side of the frame is also a distraction for my eyes. I think that if he were more at corner to corner, instead of side to side this could have helped a little bit. I also like the tones in the first one better than the second, because the second looks a little flat to me. I do like the props in the second photo though. THat is my CC. I really do like the mysterious aura of the first photo. It looks sinister, and it makes me think of the whole story.

Janine, I really like these photos. The second photo looks like something that master photographer Paul Stand took of his wife Rebecca. I really like how these are composed! Nice job! See how your subject in your second photo is laying diagonal?Corner to corner? This is what I was talking about in the second photo from your previous post above. I really like it. It is very pleasing to the eye. I like how "clear" the second photo is as well. It is more "sharp" than the first photo.

In case people were wondering about the "dragan" effect, here is a site with his works: http://andrzejdragan.com/

His style has a somewhat HDR look at times, with cutting edge sharpness and a dark moody feel. His subjects are well choosen to show off the hidden side of man's suffering... very inspirational for those who have never seen his work before.

Janine, there is a LOT of photoshoping to get to his style, a very ambitious but very good first attempt (keep working at it, you show promise!).

As for the lesson, I tend to lean towards pic #2 as well. Maybe cut down a little on the dark area above the head and possibly even tilt it so that the angle is a little more aggressive. Play with the sharpness and levels a little more and see what that gives you.

There is a lot to like about both pics, but for the goal of the exercise, #2 has a little more of my preferences leaning that way. :)

Paul Strand loved photographing his wife Rebecca. You can do a google search for images and type in his name.

Janine .....Dragan is my favorite photographer. I visit his site all the time. I could look at his photos for hours and never get tired of them. He is awesome!!! I would love to be able to become that talented!
