Well I have agonised and probably made the wrong choice with my assignment 7 upload. Here is the first lot I was tossing up. No did not choose any of these.

1. Cape Tribulation - I have not been taken with B&W landscapes. Maybe I am used to viewing everything in brilliant colours in the tropics.
2. Sunny verandah - this has some quirky angles in it and the mirrow wall has a reflection of the view behind. This I thought was a possibility.
3. Foyer palms - This building is unbelievable, but after much deliberation I thought the palms made it too busy in B&W.
4. My garlic photo - I remembered this one too late. I had already submitted. But was very unsure whether this classifies as high or low key.
5. One lonely waterlily - Thought this would pass for low key, not sure if that was correct, but thought better not to send it.

Will post the rest in next post.

Here are the rest and for the B&W photographs I took for the Architecture section. These I thought were very low key.
The first 3 are from an interior restaurant. This ceiling was amazing in colour. Not sure if it worked in B&W but the food was fabulous in the little French Restaurant :)

Then the lighter 2 photographs were taken in the Cairns International Hotel. I liked both purely due to the interesting angles, lighting and simplicity. But then again, I always enjoy walking into this foyer and great dining as well!

The one I sent in for my assignment 7 is actually the last photograph. Would you also consider these as high key? Not that this was a requirement.

To refresh your memory here is the actual assignment - SEND ONLY ONE PHOTOGRAPH:
1. Landscape B&W photo OR
2. High or Low key B&W photo (any subject you like) OR
3. B&W architecture

Was I correct in my choice? Hmmmm? Time will tell :)

Hi Ingrid and congrats making it to #7. I'm assuming this is the B&W assignment. "EDIT" this is from the first set of pics in your first post.

Most of these are very well done, but to me, it's not even close. The second photo you posted titled "Sunny verandah" has so much going on, and is so interesting, that I wouldn't consider any but this one.

The second one titled "Cape Tribulation" is very well done also. "Cape Tribulation" is a nice photo. I think though that it's hard to tell what the subject is given the overdone framing. I like the frame, but might be too overwhelming from the rest of the photo. I first thought the tree frame was the subject till I looked a little closer. The beach looks over exposed, and the contrast a little over done.

"One lonely waterlily" is too dark I think. I would check the levels on this one and see if you can bring out more detail with a little more exposure.

Like I said in your previous posts of "My garlic photo" I like this photo a lot. And I especially like that it's been changed a little since the last time you posted it. I like it better than your first post. It looks like you angled it off a little, and made a much better composit. I like it better this way. You captured the same interesting composition, and brought a new demension(sp) to it. Very well done.

"Foyer palms" is good, but the contrast hurts my eyes. I think that it's a little over done. It's a very interesting composition though.

If it were me, I would look to "Sunny verandah". This photo has a lot going on. Rule of thirds, reflections, landscape, leading lines, this photo has it all, and seems to make it all work. I wouldn't change the composition at all myself. I would again look at the contrast though. It seems to be a little overdone. But all in all, this to me anyway, is the best of the lot. Please know I like them all, but this one is so interesting with everything I mentioned.

You have a very creative nature about your work Ingrid. Most could only hope to have one of these photos to choose from. A creative mind is what photography is all about. My hats off to you and your wonderful work. Thanks for sharing it.

Were you correct in your choices? Your grade from the instructor will of course let you know that. One thing I learned before I finished the course, and something most don't know, is that you can send in as many photos for the course as you like. So you COULD send in 3 photos for those three choices on the lesson. buts heres the rub: If you send in One GREAT photo and 2 "ok" ones, the "ok" ones can bring down your score that the one GREAT photo could have given you alone.

So if you have one outstanding photo that fits the lesson, then take a chance on that one only. If you have 2 good photos that fits the lesson, and are equally good, you might consider sending in both of them to prop your grade and show your dedication. And as always........After you get your grade, and if you find yourself not happy with the results, you can always turn in extra credit to prop your initial grade. Don't underestimate this. The instructors like when you take thier advice, and the grade given, improve apon it, and submit more work for that assignment. They will give you extra credit in the way of a better grade if they feel you have bettered your ealier work and have learned from thier advice.

Joseph, thank you so much for taking so much time with your extensive responses. Yes I agree I was torn with 'Sunny Verandah' and the 'My Garlics' Amazing that you were leaning towards them as well.
But I also like the simplicity, the cleanness of 'Cairns International Hotel'. Will keep you posted re the result.
I did upload all of them and wait and see. Peter will probably hit me over the knuckles as it said...Post one only!

Your second set of photos are good as well. And since you asked, I'm going to say that I still like the second photo in your first post. Again it has everything you want as long as your levels are in line. I like the last photo of your second post, but I find the angle of the pillers to be too much. There is a fine line between an interesting angle, and one that makes the photo unnatural. Just like a little saturation is good, as is a little sharpening, but too much takes away from from the photo and makes it look over post.

OK I had another look at the Sunny Verandah (still trying to locate the coloured version) Attached is a copy of the levels. All I know is that it was one of those very bright clear tropical blue days. I think with B&W conversion this tends to make them pop more.
When I locate the coloured shot I will upload it and you can have a go at B&W conversion for me :)

You will be pleased to note that I received an excellent critique on 3 photos I submitted. Very constructive. Oh also the mark was 9/10. So I am happy about that.
I have been photographing soooo much lately and reading continually, I must be the most learned grandma by now.
