well according to lesson 3 you would use a shutter speed of 1/200 if you were shooting at 200mm.,assuming you dont have VR on your lens.(Vibration reduction).

The fast rule of thumb is for your shutter speed to be = or greater than the focal lenght. So if you are the wide side of your lens, 18mm, then you might want at least 1/20 or faster. If you are at 200mm, then something greater than 1/200. This is just a general rule only remember, but I find it a good guide to follow. People with very steady hand have pulled off good shots against this rule however. Hope this helps.

You must also figure out the crop factor first. Here is some information for you to read.

Sue is right. Crop factor does affect this general rule, but I find it hard enough just remembering to check this without the crop factor. In fact, when I'm shooting fast movers and such, I rarely think about this at all. I do however think about getting the fastest avalible shutter I can, when wanting to freeze the action, and still be properly exposed. I sometimes find myself raising the ISO to 3200 on my 40d to get the shutter speed I need.

When things start getting complex in your head... simplifiy, like stick with one lens for a week. Recently I challenged myself to be limited to a simple 30mm prime for a full day of shooting (about 400 pics) and saw the improvements becuase I was forced to THINK with every shot.
Also, rules are just rules and should be strived to sometimes be broken. Technique can often beat that rule.
Unless I have been jogging (heart is not racing, and I am relaxed), because of practice and patience, I can get perfectly focused shots at 200mm at speeds of 1/125th consistantly. I'm really aiming for 1/80th of a second stability, but that may be reaching out too far... lol, but that's my goal when I shoot to practice for stability.

I also beat that rule sometimes, but I have to be real steady! Oh and now my little avatar looks like he is looking at your post thinking "Yeah right...whatever" OR "Hmmm I might have to try that"
