Motion Artifact

Hi,

I was attempting to create a photo with the subject frozen and blurred background for assignment 3. However I keep getting a streak in photo like the one attached.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Did you get this with every picture even at different angles? Is your lens hood on? It could be lens flare, however, I think you possibly have a defective shutter.

How old is the camera and what kind is it?

No I didn't get it with all the pics, just the ones that seem to show the motion effect the best. I wasn't using a lens hood at all. I was shooting the photos around 2 hours before the sunset so perhaps it was a sun flare issue.

Tomorrow I will try to take photos around the same time with a lens hood on and see what happens.

My camera is pretty new its digital rebel xsi. I'm hoping its not a shutter issue since I never noticed a problem before. I've taken some photos inside tonight and haven't notice any problems.

Change your shooting angle, make sure the sun is behind you and see if you can duplicate the effect.

Your flash is not going off is it? I do not think so, I mean, that kind of effect could be reproduced if shutter speed was faster than 1/250th, but you are too far from the subject, and it is too even... anyways, just wanted to check. It is very strange.

On this topic, what is the green in this photo considered? It did this regardless if I focused on the unity candle or on the cross. I tend to get things like that when I shoot something really bright. Just lens flare? The way to avoid this is just to change angles, right? Is there any rule of thumb to avoid this in the first place?

Ok today I did some motion shots and the artifact did not re-appear. I will say it does take time and patience to get the shot perfect. I guess practice makes perfect.
