from a reputable firm and you buy new is a great place to start. If you need to buy used ,do it in person so you can check out everything. Also buy from a big firm,on everything you buy with a credit card you have all rights to return it or fix it until yor statisfied.

It is also smart to take steps to have a separate credit card that you use exclusively for online purchases with a lower limit.
Purchase not from big firms, but known reliable companies. Some of the biggest firms out there are currently the best known scam places.
Below is a list of companies that I have bought from in the past successfully and would have no problems recommending them to any of my friends.
Amazon.com
BHPhoto.com
adorama.com
sigma4less.com
flashzebra.com
mpex.com
gadgetinfinity.com
If you see a place selling something for WAY less, check them out on www.resellerratings.com for complaints or verification. It is easy to spot the main scammers by using this resource.
