New competition theme for November '08 is:
"The Shadows"
The shape of an object usually provides our first impression of it and is our primary means of identifying the things around us. Consequently, shape is a powerful design element in pictures. One of the richest sources of interesting shapes is shadows. Of course - all photographs are created as a combination of light and shadows, but compositional shadows must be much more than mere tonal variation. They need to be bold to create a strong visual impression and hold the viewer's attention.
Not only do they form a design on their own, but they give vital clues about the object that cast them. Sometimes they are abstracted, which strengthens the sense of mystery.
It does not mean that all we want to see are pure shadows this month. It could become quite boring. You can have a strong main subject inside an interesting shadow, in front or behind it or let it be a part of it. Just be creative, it's part of being a good photographer!
