View Full Version : Basic question about lessons--editing

I probably saw the answer here somewhere already, but just can't find it now. When we submit photos for the lessons, are we suppose to submit them SOOC, or can we do some editing on them?

I tend to shoot RAW, so at minimum I'd want to do some sharpening and color adjusting. And maybe exposure adjusting.

I don't particularly want to shoot jpegs, because I'm liking learning what I can about dealing with Camera Raw in CS3 right now. But it doesn't seem reasonable to "go crazy" with CS3, and rearrange the whole photo before I submit it either. . . .

Are there guidelines for this or any thoughts on this?

This would be a good question to email the instructor directly. But I think it's ok, at least I did, to do basic editing. You know you can't always get the right composition right out of the camera, so you have to crop in an editing program. The instrutors know this. When I was doing the course I always shot in RAW and did basic editing. After all, editing is part of the course in the way of correct color and levels and such.

I shoot in Raw always as well. However the point of taking a course for me at least is to become a better photographer and learn to make what I see in my mind happen by learning to control light and my equipment.

For the purpose of the course I offer that you will learn more if you shoot the assignments in both Raw and Jpeg then submit the untouched Jpeg.

I understand what you are saying. But a few other thoughts:

Most cameras WB settings are easily fooled to where the colors aren't quite right. This is very normal. So do you submit this un-touched knowing that the colors are off without trying to correct it?

What about obvious imperfections like pimples when you are doing the portrait part of the course? Should you not try and correct that a little to try and help improve your grade and satisfaction.

We all strive to come as close as we can to the perfect shot out of the camera, but even the highest paid professionals have to do simple or complex fixes to their shots to get them the way they envisioned it in the viewfinder. I wouldn't be afraid to do minor touch-ups to your assignments if you have to. But like I said, this would be a good question to email admin about.
