Hi
I am trying to build a super macro lens assembly .I built a lens set that i thought would give me the macro and magnification i wanted to achieve some good close up magnified images. My problem is when i introduce these lens elements to the rebel camera it does not perform as expected , however not deterred i bought an old fuji a210 point and shoot and hey presto with a little playing with the zoom feature i can get close magnified pictures ( a little soft ,but i am working on that).Has anybody tried this sort of thing before ? was i failing with the rebel because it's software is too intelligent?

I highly doubt you were failing because software was too intelligent. "Building" a macro lens and having a lens with true macro capabilities are two totally different things.

Whereas a macro adapter will try to magnify an image, Glass quality is usually very low and shows imperfections. One of those imperfections is lack of sharpness and some free distortion tossed in.

A true macro lens lets you get a 1:1 magnification of your object that is very sharp and clear.

A macro attachment is not going to give you anything close to these results.

Now, on a point and shoot camera, if the macro function is not built in, it may be very hard to find a good macro lens for it, but for a dSLR, because you can change lenses on them, finding a good macro lens takes no more effort than a little research.
