Christmas Pics

My daughter wants me to take their family pic infront of the xmas tree so she can make some xmas cards.I would love any advice on some ideas for lighting so it would be soft and warm, and capture the feel of Christmas.

- Camera on a tripod
- Aperture at something between F/5 to F/8
- ambient lights low (no full bright house lights, but some ambient light is good)
- christmas tree lights on
- Off camera flash set to just the right power to light the people without overcoming the background. Off camera flash is more preferable than on camera flash

If you do it right, you will see the tree, it's lights will look bright and the people will be lit a little brighter than the tree (about a 1/2 to 1 stop brighter than the lights on the tree).
