This is a very simple still life using only 2 pears, a black velvet cloth and a softbox. I created this to prove that almost anyone can make good still life images.

The softbox is low and to the left of the pears, I wanted it to simulate window light. I also did not want any fill light and for the shadows to be dark. The pairs were carefuly arrange for the shadow side of the front pear to contrast with highlights from the rear pear. I think if I would have added another object or any color it would have taken away from the image. The black background was chosen to accent the monotone color of the pears. A UV filter was lightly smeared with a drop of glycern to give the image a soft focus diffusion.

The diffusion with the glycerin really works great with this photo.

That's a classic beauty and you make it seem so simple. Very nice indeed.

Thank you Garth. This really is so simple and you don't need anything elaborate or expensive. I have a couple of $8 flood light lights from Wal-mart that I sometimes use for things like this. The work really well this type of still life and highly recommend that everyone serious about photography pick-up a couple. You really learn so much from trying to simple still life photography.

Here's another image that came from shooting the pears.
