Please can someone help. I'm finding lesson 7 black and white tricky. I have converted a couple of pics to black & white using 'Convert to Greyscale' in Photoshop Camera Raw. I would appreciate some advise on whether this is a good enough method, and/or what to do instead. I am having trouble identifying what makes a black & white picture successful. Any advice/CC would be greatly appreciated.

I like the first photo better in the B&W because I like the contrast. Very pretty place to photograph.

Thank you it is the most beautiful place.
It is Grisdale Tarn, in the Lake District (North England) we walked for 3 hours to get there up...it was worth it though.

I have adjusted the levels on the two shots, I think the contrast is better now.

I think contrast is one of the most important things in a black and white photo also. It help define everything.
Beautiful pictures!!

There is no one correct way to do anything in photography. There is where you are going to have to develop your eye and trust your instincts a lot.

The only thing that I do not really suggest is setting the camera to take B&W pics.

Generally, I simply desaturate and then play with the levels and contrast in CS3 to achieve my goals.

Hi Laura,I have to agree with jerryph in that there is nothing set in stone about any photo or photographing technique, I am new to photography myself so still have lots to learn, the one thing I do know is I enjoy myself and never take anything to seriously. What I tend to do is take photo study it a little depending on what I'm shooting depends on how and if I edit at all.Whatever you do with any photo if you get that wow factor from your own photo you should be happy and most other will to.

Most of all Enjoy......
