View Full Version : 10 Elements of Composition

A reply to one of my posts inspired me to learn more about composition. One of the first sites I came accross online gave these elements as somethings to consider.
Pattern
Symetry
Texture
Depth of field
Lines
Framing
Perspective
Space
Balance
Color
the site is http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/5-elements-of-composition-in-photography/
I just googled composition photography and found the site.
I was thinking it would be fun to have a little challange with the elements. So find a shot that enhances texture, or symetry, or one of the other 10. I would like to get more ideas on all of it, so please.....inspire me!! :)

Since you are the maker of this thread Julia, I want to see you inspire me.

Yes I had to take it WITH NO FLASH OR STROBES. haha you should have watched how fun that was to take. We had so much fun. That is straight off camera, we were not allowed to use photoshop for anything but the resize to be able to post, and that was it. lol You know I wanted to use the clone tool, and some other little photoshop favorites ..oh well. I got my "A" I dug up some old continuous lighting that I had here, so I used that.

Thanks for the reply Sue. Yes I can see a few areas where a clone tool would help, but still, it's a wonderful shot. Great color, good DOF, expression is certainly good. And I can't believe the makeup. Who came up with that? It looks like more fun then you should be allowed to have. :) Wonderful photo Sue. One you should should PS a little and slap in on the wall next to your others.

LOL that would be ME that came up with the makeup idea. Leave it to me lol Remember this one from Halloween time? AGAIN STAGE MAKEUP! It was my "door" photo! I had excellent reviews on this by several instructors. THIS PHOTO I LIKE THE USE OF THE LINES OF THE WINDOW MULLENS and HOW the door FRAMES my subject. http://www.proudphotography.com/forum/gallery/files/8/2/8/2_1_1_wood_1.jpg

Cool I also see shapes....the circles.
Texture ? I feel this shows the texture of the leaf. The leaf was green, but the alteration in colour seemed to enhance its texture.

Depth of field. I like how the apple looks like it is leaning on the plate.
Can anyone tell me how to post it as a thumbnail, instead of the huge picture?
I would also like to know how to post as a thumbnail. I will look out for a response to yours.
Texture/lines ? I think the lines enhance the natural crinkly texture of the petals.

That is a cool affect. I noticed that right away.
I post as a thumbnail, use the paperclip symbol to upload a picture into a post.

I like it! Just my own little opinion, I think maybe if there was a tid bit more ocean in view, and a little less sand on the bottom. I have been reading about the rule of thirds, and when I look at this picture it is set up that way, but I would have like to see a little more ocean with it. Nice shot though!

Kaye - I love this shot. Myself, I think just a hint of the ocean leads to what there is beyond - gives it a bit of mystery and wonder. Can you send some of that sand and warmth my way??

Thanks for your comment Debbie. I also feel that what is beyond in the depth of a photo is generally blurred, so therefore I did not allow for too much background.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could send some warmth via our emails in the forums. Just have to send warm words instead!!

Thanks julimucca for your comments. I love hearing other people's opinions. Next shot like this I can allow for more water - can always crop if it is no good!

It's free flowing. I did a burst of shots just to see what would come up and I could not believe I photographed a face in a waterfall! Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.

Hi Julimucca (I presume your name is Julie??)
Thanks for the nice comments. About 20 years ago, I lived in Noumea, New Caledonia. As we spent plenty of time by the water over there, I did collect quite a few shells, but only have two which are special. I may post the other one to Weekly Photoshots soon as well.

I just love this kid! She is turning 3 today, and had a princess party on saturday with all her little friends. It was so cute!

Keith, I personally think this is a great shot with great timing.
I am pretty much a beginner, but wanted to comment as I have tried to get shots like this, but they were not this good.
I still have so much to learn, but as I see it, the elements of composition are:
Depth of field, Lines and Space.
I will also look forward to comments from the more advanced photographers.

Julimucca - what a fabulous shot. I just love this angle - and the subject is precious! Her skirt frames her perfectly.

These pictures are really interesting. You guys have excellent imagination to take such creative shots. Unfortunately I rather lack the creative touch. However, this photo does make use of symmetry (the hotel building) and asymmetry (the colours of the trees). I am afraid the sky is not very interesting.

Clive - I love the general idea and think with a little PP, it would just "POP".

Hi Debbie,
I am open to advice. What sort of PP do you suggest?

Clive - With your permission, I'd like to give it a try. Maybe adjust the levels and sharpen a bit.

Hi Debbie,
That is so much better! I like the way you have brightened up the image and the sky is magnificent. How did you do it?

Hi Richsufan,
How about DOF and perspective? These elements particularly apply to the line of trees.

Clive - I adjusted the levels a bit, added some clouds from a photo I had taken and sharpened bit. That's it. Took me about 5 minutes.
andromeda143
01-22-2009, 01:45 AM
Thanks, that's great, but how did you replace the background with your clouds? That is something I have difficulty with.

01-22-2009, 01:56 AM
Clive -
Duplicate the layer, make sure the new layer is active. Use the magic wand to select, then delete the sky.
Open a picture that has a background you like then drag that layer into the original picture.
Close the background picture.
Then drag your new background layer under the original and your new background should be visible.
You may have to delete or erase colors from the original.
I did this in Elements at work today - should be the same process for Photoshop. Hope this helps.
andromeda143

Thanks, Debbie
I will try it again. I have tried a similar way, but find it difficult to get the edges right between the sky and the rest of the picture. I use Elements on Mac, together with Aperture.
Thanks again.

This was one of my first attempts at high shutter speed and macro with a liquid. I feel the composition of it is space and perspective.

Julia,
That is a very interesting picture. How about a little info about what it is and how you obtained it? The colour and texture is intriguing, and also the ring, which appears embedded, but I presume is a reflection.

01-24-2009, 04:35 AM
Clive,
It is actually chocolate soy milk. The background ended up being pretty dark, so I just darkened it all the way in picasa 3 with the shadow setting. The reflection that you see on the bottom of it is actually the rim of the cup I was dripping it into. I had the shutter speed on 1/800 I think, and the macro setting was on. I cropped the picture a bit too.
Thanks for your comment. :)
andromeda143

How fascinating! I thought the liquid was more viscous than soy milk. I must try some macro photography. It reveals a different world altogether.
Thanks for the insights.
