Hi everyone.
I'm Paul. I got a Sony a300 last month with the 70mm kit lens.
I'm wanting to get new glass, like around 300mm and a maybe a good macro.
Could you help me with recommending what glass to get at a good price?
I'm a total beginner and don't have the first clue what to get.
Thank you

Hard to recommend anything to anybody.
But I would seriously question anybody's need for a 300mm x crop = 450mm +/-... unless your are an avid birdwatcher.
If you want macro + portrait I would go for something in the region of 100mm + macro.( 150 after crop)
2 birds with one stone.
Paul.

With having a sony, you can purchase the Minolta lenses (check which ones) Sony used the same connection as the Minolta cameras. You should have a good selection to choose from. I would see what area of photography you are interested in the most, and then choose the lens from that.

I second this..all depends on what you like to photograph.

By 70mm kit, do you mean the 18-70mm lens? If so, I would spend a little time with it, and then see what you find yourself wanting most. Do you find yourself wanting more zoom? Then maybe that 300mm is in order - or maybe a 70-300 zoom. Do you find yourself wanting more light? Then maybe a 50mm or 100mm prime lens with a wide aperture (1.4 or 2.8, respectively) would be better. Or if you want to do close-ups, then go for the macro. It really depends on what you find yourself wishing you had on you at any given moment.

I have A200 and started with kit lens same as you have, I have not a big budget so looked around read the forums and purchased the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG Macro and to be I have managed with these two lenses fine.Like most have said it depends on what you want to do, I like taking photo's of wildlife birds and things but also really enjoy close ups flowers etc.
Happy hunting mate and most of all enjoy it to many people way to serious life's to short.

Thanks for the help everyone. yes it was the 18-70mm kit lens. At the shop i got it from, there was a Tamron 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 Di lens for £99, but it was only £99 with the camera. Anyway i was in the shop yesterday and said to the guy in the shop, if i bring my receipt down would he give me the lens half price and the guy said, yes. Does anyone know if this is a good lens? I will get it anyway as the deal is a good one.
Anyway i want a lens for wildlife, and landscape. More light would be good.
Thanks for the help

I have the Alpha 100 and 350 both with kit lenses and as extra bought the Minolta AF75-300 with Macro of 1.5 m. I am still very new to this fantastic hobby but have taken some nice pics and closeups with this Minolta lense and it was reltivaly cheap as well.
