Everyone thinks that you have to have 2 to 20 lights in a portrait... well sometimes, the most simple of methods can work to achieve your goal... like in this case, a single light source.

If you are trying to show the moody side of anyone, just use a single off camera flash with a long (about 1 foot) snoot over it and hold it in your hand or place it on a lightstand. The snoot constricts the light into a very tight beam that is easy to control.

Lighting setup:
Camera: Nikon D700
ISO 200
Aperture: F/5.6
Lens: Nikkor 24-70 at 62mm

Flash:
Nikon SB-800 Speedlight at 1/4 power about 8 feet from the subject on a light stand and about 15 degrees to camera right.
