That's a great start to macro photography Dick. I love macro and do a lot of it. It may be difficult to get nice sharp images with the lens you are using cause it's not ment for macro work. The depth of field on this shot is spot on. I love how a nice soft background can really isolate the subject.

Do you use a specific manual focus point, or use "all" and let the camera decide where to focus? The reason I ask, but it's hard to tell on this image, but it looks like some of the wign, and some of the flower the bee is on is in better focus that the bees face.

I would be interested in the exif data if you can post it sometime. Congrats on your first macro.

Yep, on your 40d, like many DSLR's you can set which focus point you want to be active. For most aplications most use the center point. That way when you have the subject in the frame, you can dictate what will be in the most focus. With your bee macro, and portraits the eyes are the most important part and should always be in focus unless it's a shot out of the norm. if you had the center point selected, you can just put the center point on the bee's eye and shoot away.

Choosing a manual focus point will go a long way to controlling what in your image is most important and in focus. Otherwise, if "all" focus point are selected, your camera decides what it thinks is the most important. And we all know cameras aren't smart enough to do this efficiantly.

Look at your 40d manual for info on choosing a manual focus point.
