View Full Version : Looking down...

Hi all,
In Weekly Photoshots, we have had "looking up", and "looking through". Perhaps we should start one:
"looking down".
Guess this is fairly open: eg. could be a shot looking down on a flower, or.. looking down a well.
Any comments??

P.S. I should have named this "Weekly Photoshots New #3--- Looking down"

Photos looking down is more difficult than I thought.
Will start with this one...

Nice fern. Here is a shot taken at Tintagel in Cornwall, which some say was the original castle of the legendary King Arthur.

Thought I'd play with this one. I took this last fall and it was only for practice in portraits and I've a long ways to go before I can say I know what I'm doing. For one, I need to be aware of my backgrounds. My niece was afraid to come up the old steps any further and the ac was in the background. I know I can clone it out but this was just practice and not anything serious. I was using fill flash and like how her face was better lit. Any comments on how I can do this better is definitely welcome. If I could have convinced her to come up a few more steps, I could have got the ac out of the background but she wasn't coming up...:)
But, it does fit the theme of looking down.

Hi Clive, I really like this. Nice shot looking down, but, it makes me think of tv scenes when one is thrown to the pit of lions?? I would not enter the gate.. Very realistic.

I love shots of ferns. And your view on this one is great, Kaye. I've always wanted to live where I could have ferns everywhere....I just get to have a few in the shaded areas of my porches.

Great shot, Clive, from a different perspective. This is something I've tried to work on a lot...shooting from perspectives that most people don't.

Mary, I think it is a beautiful photo/portrait. I am very much a beginner in the portait area (and also many other areas)! Still much of a beginner really.
I know I am not as experiencd as you, but I realise everyone enjoys anothers opinion:
I agree your shot is a lovely view of "looking down" gently, very nice.
Perhaps a touch too much light on her face in my opinion in the two spots you will see. You could, I think touch this up quite easily with Photoshop. I presume you have Photoshop and are probably quite proficient at it.
If you would like me to also try on Photoshop, and send back to you, I am most happy to do this. Just let me know. Perhaps as you said, a bit of cloning on the background would also be good.
I love editng photos, and am still learning photoshop.

You should also enter this in next POTM theme: Portraits & Emotions...

Edit to your hearts content, Kaye. I'm really new to portraits. I usually like to take landscapes and old buildings. They stand still for me...:). But, I was wanting to practice on portraits and my niece is a willing participant. As long as its not scary.....the old stairs worried her a bit. I have CS2 and can clone out the background but not sure how or what to do with the two light spots on her face. Thanks for the kudos.

Hi Mary,
I did what I could with my small knowledge of CS2 and tried to get rid of the light spots on your niece's face. Faces are very difficult and this is my first try. I am also not into portrait photography - I think it is very difficult. I love landscapes, natural sceneries and flowers.

(I also think I do better editing landscapes eg. getting rid of people in the way; or wires across photos), etc. Or getting rid of people in front of a nice building.

When you change one thing when editing, you then need to alter something else. I don' think my edit of your shot is that great - perhaps the original with the light spots is better? It is hard for me to tell now as I have been looking at it for quite a while.
See what you think. I did not have time to alter background. If I could only find the time to spend a couple more hours on it, maybe it would be much better.

I will attach both my edited version and your original.
I thank you for the chance to practice on your shot.

P.S. MARY, I HAD TO EDIT MESSAGE, SORRY, - I FORGOT ABOUT HER CHIN - IT IS STILL A BIT TOO BRIGHT !!

Wow...Kaye, I don't know how you did that but the results are awesome. Some weekend, when we both have time, you will have to tell me how you did that. I didn't notice all the light until I did a comparison between the original and your edited version. Great work, Kaye!

Thanks Mary for comments, don't know if you know it's a Parrott Tulip. Got some bulbs in Amsterdam and have them planted, hoping some will survive all the cold weather we've had, with more on the way this week.

These are all good shots. Mary, your niece has a pretty face and the pose is good. Kaye did a good job of removing the side lighting spot, but I am not sure about the second one. I think removing the aircon background would also improve it a great deal.

Eddie, lovely flower. the colour is brilliant. I think it would improve the shot if it were possible to tone down the colour of the background flowers, so the beautiful colour of the main subject would stand out.

Just my humble opinion, of course.

Once again, this idea of the downward angle brings out new perspectives and wonderful opportunities. how fascinating!

Eddie, this is a great shot and certainly within the theme. It really is looking down a LONG WAY!!
My version to improve this would be a touch less brightness and a hint more colour, as there are some lovely colours there. Bring them out a little more. Well done.

Hi Clive,
I was wondering what you meant by the second one ??
I did the edit on Mary's lovely niece, taking out the light spots. I attached it, and underneath I attached the original photo with the lightspots on her face, etc. (Did you think this was another edit?) Just curious.

I've seen a few pictures of the Parrott Tulips and read a little about them but have never seen them in real life. Tulips are so beautiful and I love them but can't seem to keep them very long. I think the animals like to dig up my bulbs.

Hi photometric,

I love cats and photos of them. I had two but one died recently. The other, whose name is Sweepie, is almost all black like this one. I find her very difficult to photograph. Usually, all I get is a pair of big staring eyes.

Freespirit, I think you did a great edit on photoshop from brown to the final black background. And clever thinking to flip photo. Often we do not think of this, but sometimes it proves to work well.

Hi to all,
If you do not hear as much from me, it is because I was "chosen" on a panel to do Jury Duty in Sydney. This will last for about 7 working days. It is FULL ON - LIKE A PRISON - but just another interesting part of my life. (Pity, they do not allow photos as it is a great building).
Keep up the good work - there are some really nice shots in this thread, thanks to all who participated.
I will respond when I can. And a thank you to all other PP members who offered assistance with responses on "Looking Down".

I believe it counts as looking down, and it is a nice shot.
I was trying to explain how I would try to edit this shot to get more clarity, but I had to try it first myself in order to say what I would do.
On Photoshop I added light and contrast, and altered colour slightly. I will attach what I tried rather quickly. I'm not really sure that I made any improvement. I will attach both yours and mine. Keep posting more good shots.

Hi Dan,
To downsize, just go to message box at bottom of page. Under box you will see "Quick reply" or "Go Avanced". Click go advanced. At top you will see a little paper clip. Click on it and it will bring up a screen called "Manage Attachments".
Firstly just check that your pic meets the size requirements as listed. Then just browse to find your pic. Then minimise the Manage Attachments, and click on the arrow on right of paper clip. You should then be able to attach as a Thumbnail.
I hope this helped.

The good wife and myself went there last year and we climbed to the top (picture taken from top looking down) it's approx 3 stories high and very unsafe if you can see the rocks they are not fixed but loose very unsteady under foot. I didn't tell you did I as well as a top photographer I'm also a mountaineer:D

Len, I love this shot. (Could be more impressive if you posted in larger version (as we cannot enlarge on this one). I know you know how to put in "thumbnail" version, then we can enlarge it and see better.
If you are also a mountaineer, you must be fit and have the opportunity of heaps of shots.
