The 208-tonne “Angel” basically takes the form of a human figure based on artist Antony Gormley's own body. At 20 metres high, the Angel is higher than a five-storey building. Its wings are 54 metres wide - almost the same as a jumbo jet.

Overlooking the A1 at Gateshead, at least 90,000 motorists a day will pass by the sculpture. Rail passengers travelling on the East Coast mainline from London to Edinburgh will also see the angel as they approach Newcastle.

Lovely shot, love the clouds, and the people show the scale of the angel, spot on

When I first looked at this I assumed the people were deep in the background and the angel was no taller than a person. What a surprise it was to find out it was so big, and the people were right underneath it! You must have been very far away from it to get it all in the shot, or had a very wide lens. Or both. :) Very interesting shot that played tricks with my depth of vision. Nice work.

Super shot, Owen. I've heard of this angel somewhere...not sure where but I think I've even seen a photo before. You did a great job of showing the size of this statue with the people below it.

Like what Mr Doug said!
I was looking at this shot in my ipod in a hotel yesterday, but now that I am home, I am looking at on a big screen, it is even better.

I have passed this statue many times on my jounrey from fife to Herts, it never ceases to amaze me how "big" it really is. your capture is brilliant, a very powerful profile of this legendary angel.

cheers Martha

Hi Owen thought you would be interested in this site. Doreley Kinsley Information books are looking for sites around Britain.

I love this shot.
I like pictures that get me thinking...
1) How does that stay up in those North Eastern gale force winds?...surely it would want to fly off
2) What is that man doing with the kid on his shoulder on the right?
3) Those clouds are soo moody
