I need some honest critique on my pictures for lesson 5. I think I understand the "rule of thirds" pretty well, but finding interesting items to photograph for "leading lines" and "geometric shapes" is more challenging than I would have thought. I was out this weekend just playing and would like critique on some of the shots I took (keeping in mind that I was working specifically on lesson 5).

The gate was for "diagonal lines"; the duck is "leading lines" or "ro3"; muskoka chairs is "contrast"; the wood stove is for "geometric shapes-square"; the stove top is "geometric shapes-circles" ... or do I have it all wrong ?!?

I will be doing a lot more shooting before submitting any photos for lesson 5, but I'm hoping that I'm on the right track with my thinking.

Well, lets see...I'm not sure the gate falls under diagonal lines. I believe this would be quite a stretch and the duck is definitely not leading lines. You contrast is good and the stove could fall very easily under shapes. You need the lines to lead to something or somewhere. Be it a road or path or even a row of trees or light poles that lead your eye through the photo. Hope this helps!

Thanks LadyUPS,

So the gate picture first; the trees and stumps aren't creating triangles along the sides of the picture to frame it? ..

And the geometric shapes ... I thought the stovetop picture was an example with the triangulated shape in the bottom right corner and the repetition of the circles ... ??? and the stove itself had repetition in the rectangular shapes.... ??? Do I have the concept completely wrong?

On the gate, you could be right but it doesn't stand out enough for me to see it. But, I'm not the best judge of this. As to the stove, I was in agreement with you on it....I can see the shapes in it just fine and I think you are on the right track with it. It was your leading lines that I can't see at all.

Thanks again LadyUPS,

I think I should have left the duck out of the group completely. I had another leading line shot that I put up for comment a week or so back with my daughter on a bridge that I think was more in line with the concept... The duck shot is being axed !!! (I didn't really like it anyway)

Yes, Melanie..I remember that photo and to me, it did fall under the subject of leading lines much better than the last one you posted. Do a google search with leading lines photography and see what all you come up with.

Thanks for your help with this Mary. I'm heading out again this weekend and then will choose which pictures to load up to complete the assignment.

I like things to be a little bit different than others and therefore was hoping to come up with a more original idea for leading lines than the typical railroad track, roadway .. or bridge (like I posted) .. but am having trouble being creative.

Maybe something will hit me this week !! :)
