Hi Cathy, IMHO(humble), no1 seems to lack contrasts with very deep shadows (looks like it was shot in bright sunshine). Can I assume shot in normal colour then converted to B&W. No2 in my opinion is a better subject and shows up better but if shot in portrait would have emphasized the height of the taller unit.
Hope this helps.

Hi Eddie, Yes 1st pic ws taken in really bright sun...I know its the first rule of photograghy not to shoot at these times but heyho.

They were both taken in B&W and I messed about with the shadows and highlights, but as I have said before I tend to go OTT.

Hi Cathy, can understand where your coming from, at the end of the day we all try to take images as we see them and opinions will always differ, we all see things differently. It's the satisfaction of getting out, snapping away and being pleased with our efforts.

Hi Cathy....if you are asking for suggestions...I'll try but I'm like you, I've never got to the point of being pleased with my work...I like the fire extinguishers one best but I also see some great potential in the building shot. I really like how you use leading lines with the building, sidewalk, driveway, etc....plus the use of the round ball in the foreground sets the image off. The only thing that I would like to see is better sky...if possible, can you go reshoot this image on a puffy cloud morning or evening?

In my opinion, you should shoot this in color and convert it in your software program. I'm not sure what program you use.

Hi Mary,
Thank you for your kind words, will defo try to go back on puffy day great suggestion,

As for my software I have cs3 but on the first pics I just used picassa as CS3 scares the life outta me as I havent had the chance with working etc to really sit down and study/play with it.

Its so good to have people who are willing to give constructive advise without being critical, thats why this site is so good, EVERYONE s very helpful.

Thanks again

Cathy...the next time you are out there...shoot in color...your CS3 has a awesome B/W adjustment layer...

Just goggle CS3 B/W adjustment and you will find lots of tutorials on how to use it.

Jaydi,
I have CS2 and still have heaps to learn. The other day I was playing around with "Channels", which will show you a B&W version for each colour R, G, & B. You will get different shades of B&W, so for example you may choose just 2 colours together leaving the other one out.
Just a thought for some spare time practice!
