Raw Settings

Hi folks ,I haven't been around for a while but am shifting gears and plannng on getting back into the swing of things.

I have decided to give RAW a shot but don't know what setting I need. I found how to do the set it up but do I want RAW + large/fine or RAW + large/normal

or medium or small same as above???

There are 20 options available in camera setup chart and I don't have a clue.

Dick, personally I get very anal about this kind of stuff and I would go with Raw+large/fine. But it will also depend on which image you will end up working with. If you will be "processing" the RAW file and want a smaller jpeg for say emailing purposes, then go with the RAW/small file. Ultimately, it will be based on what you will be doing with that jpeg file. This will of course reduce the number of pictures you can have on your card. Good luck on whichever you choose. I myself shoot in RAW only.

Dick, there is basically only ONE setting for RAW files, the other options are to create a RAW and a JPG file of different sizes for your needs. For example, RAW + FINE means a RAW file and a JPG file in the FINE size... 2 files of the same picture.

If you are just playing, set the camera to create only RAW files of the highest quality settings you can (reference your manual for this) and forget about the JPG files.

For me, on my camera, I use the highest quality uncompressed RAW files all the time. Now that I am doing a lot of weddings and shooting in dark areas, I use every bit of that extra dynamic range. When I am in the studio and I have control over the lighting, I use the same settings, but I could just as easily use a compressed RAW setting, since I have 100% control over the quality of the light... still, it gives me peace of mind knowing that I am shooting at only the highest quality settings my camera can at any given point in time.
