Nick - I've recently been looking into Macro lenses and came across a test that was carried out in July's issue of Photoplus (Canon edition). The Minolta lens wasn't one of the lenses being tested but the Sigma 50mm was given very good reviews. It was awarded the 'best value' fixed focal length lens with "excellent quality optics and build". Not only that but it is equally adept as a fast 'standard' 50mm prime lens. The only other lens which had better results was the Tamron 90mm f2.8 but is about 150 euros more. I suppose it depends on how much you're willing to spend. It might be worth 'googling' both lenses, there are plenty of reviews out there. Hope this helps and good luck!
Thanks Denise
I've will look on ebay again. The minolta lens s/h is about the same as and new sigma last time I looked.

I have not used a minolta, but if you are looking at the new 50mm DC EX HSM F/1.4 lens, I just picked mine up yesterday, and it is nothing short of impressive.

Now, be aware that some people are getting front focusing issues with the Sigma... so if you decide on this one, check for it... scratch that... no matter what you get, check it out no matter what you get. :)
Mine is perfect in that area and I am VERY pleased with it.
Bought second hand Minolta from Ebay can't wait I hope it turn up soon.
I found one in Kansas US payed an bit over AU $400 ink shipping
Got my lens 5 days from Kansas to melbourne not bad!! Very pleased
My first true macro/prime lens, been playing around with it with some random subjects and I am very pleased with it. The color out of the box with no touch up is superb and and the super narrow DOF at f2.8 is quite amazing when shooting macro subjec.
And best of all AU $420 for an old model Minolta 50mm f2.8 Macro lens but new came in a box with all the papers Happy Days :D:D:D
