Hi I have just bought a Nikon D90 and now have no money left over for any accessories. I have a flash off on old canon film SLR, I tried it on my Nikon camera very hesitantly and it seemed to work ok. My question is can a flash cause damage to a camera if it isn't designed for that camera? I only used it once and have been too scared to use it again!
Cheers, thanks for any advise you guys can offer me.
Mick.

Hi mick the flash will only do damage to the camera if the voltage of the flash is higher than what the manufacturers recommend the voltage of the D90 can take.So my suggestion would be is go to the users manual and see what the highest voltage flash it can take cheers.

Thanks Steve,
I will check it this afternoon.
Aside from the voltage dif = damage, you may not get TTL. It'll possibly fire full strength every time.

If that flash had a higher voltage than the camera could handle, it would already have fried it.
To try it without checking first was careless at the very least. If your camera is still alive... you got lucky. :)
The flash (if it has the option) will have to have the power set manually for best effect.
