A few more 2.
Joseph, I particularly like the photo #3 in the second set - you got great depth of field on that shot. #1 & #2 of the third set are good for the opposite effect.
I see you use a 430EX - do you use a diffuser of some sort? I generally use a small lightbox attachment to help soften the shadows, but as you know, macro lighting can sometimes be tougher than it looks.

Hi Jess. I'm starting to use one more and more, but most if not all of these were taken with one. I have the plastic white capped model that fits the 430. It does soak up a stop of flash though. Not a huge deal, I guess any diffuser is going to deplete the light in some degree. Thanks for the comments.

Nice Joseph! I like them all!! (I could do with out the 'creepy crawly spider':eek:...and how close did you have to get to that?)

I have a 100mm macro. so the end of the lens will be about a foot away, but many of these, like the hairy spider, is very small. The spider is about 1/2 a pencil eraser. So there is little chance of it attacking me. I went out today and saw the biggest Yellow Jacket, or Northern Bumble Bee I've ever seen. It was huge. I got real close to it and it came for me. Sounded like a jet passing by. Thanks for the comments MJ.

Joseph, these are amazing Macros.
I loved the caterpillar doing its calisthenics;
I didn't know yellow jackets had blue eyes;
Your dragonfly is simply incredible;
I loved the texture of the buds on the flower head, every fiber was clear as can be;
And when I saw the spider the theme song to Mission Impossible played in my head (yeah, warped lol)
Great work. Don't you love your Macro lens? :)

A regular normal pencil eraser?? That is like a 1/4 inch wide...you mean that "creepy crawly ferocious looking creature" was half of that, an 1/8 of an inch :o?? (I can handle those guys :cool: )
I may have to get a little more serious about looking into one of those lenses- except nobody that I have checked with has them in stock! What else do you use it for outside of macro?

Ya it was small. I gage the furiousness of a spider by if I can actually see the hair with the naked eye. :)
This 100mm lens is truly a great lens. Sharp and clean. This lens is like any other in that it's a good all around lens too. And an exceptional portrait lens as well. But now after doing so many macro shots, I long for the 180mm f3.5 macro.

For everyday sort of use...how far away would you have to be...say if you used it to take that shot of your daughter on your avatar?

Maybe I should have stated that differently. 100mm macro is an "all-around" lens meaning it can do it all. I don't consider it a walk around lens because it's not wide enough. My avatar is a huge crop, but to frame that same shot with the 100mm you might have to be about 15 ft. maybe a little more.

Brilliant Joseph. I LOVE the green bug (5th pic on first post) That thing is freaky bug eye looking :)

Question??? If one of those crawlly little critters was "on" your macro lense, could you focus enough to get a shot? Or is that to close?

Thanks John. No. I think with this lens you can be a little less than a foot away and still focus, but not right on it.
