I'm really looking forward to this course... I love to take photos and every once in a while I get a great one, but I don't know why some shots turn out and others don't. I recently decided it was time to start with the basics and learn from the ground up instead of just blindly mucking about and hoping for the best... and that in a nutshell is why I'm here.

Cheers,
Carolyn

I've been taking "snapshots" for years and decided to learn more about photography - really getting into the lessons. This past weekend I purchased a new camera and these classes are very beneficial to help in getting to know my new equipment.

I'm Gary and I live in Louisville, Kentucky. I'm 60 years young and retire from the IT industry in less than 2 years (YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY!). I can't wait! What used to be my passion turned into drudgery once I started doing it for a living. Same thing happened when I played guitar. Started doing it for a living and it lost it's attraction. Therefore, photography and gardening will remain off limits to that sort of thing. Strictly for MY enjoyment.

I got bit by the bug about 3 months ago after I picked up a Kodak Z740. I've been mucking about with digital cameras ever since the old 640 x 480 jobs but, my cousin got a Sony H7 and showed me some of his tight shots and, of course, I just HAD to have one. Problem was, $$$$. I couldn't afford the dosh so, I went on eBay and picked up a Z740; sold it for twice what I paid for it ($57) and picked up a Z650; sold the Z650 for a few bucks more and picked up the Z612 (which I REALLY like immensely!). So, actually, I only paid $57 for an immaculate Z612. Saved enough money on it that I could get a fairly nice tripod (with level & quick release!), +10 Macro lens, PL & UV filters, a A/C power supply and a FAST 2 gig SD card.

I've been playing with it for about a month and I think I'm doing OK but, I know I can do better. I'm interested mostly in nature photos mainly. I've set up a feeding station outside my office window at home and I grow roses and day lilies (I know, I know... just what you need to see... more roses). I promise to expand my horizons.

I'm looking forward to taking the course and learning the capabilities of the Z612 and improving my photography techniques.

I'm Peter, originally from the UK, and have lived in Asia for the last 22 years. I've taken up photography (again) for my 40th birthday and had been looking for a course to relearn the basics, when I stumbled across this online course. Since signing up for this course I realized I had never learned in the first place, and what I have learned has really come in handy.

Hi Everyone. My name is Rhian I'm from the UK. I have just bought myself a Canon 400D. I used to have a 35mm about 20 odd years ago and gave up photography when I had my children as I had no time. Children are now in their teens and I have some time to myself. I'm having to learn all over again as digital is somewhat different to the old 35mm cameras. Have enjoyed the lessons so far (on lesson 3) looking forward to completing some assignments. Not sure which area I have a preferrence for at the moment but enjoying being given tasks. Hope to use the forum for chats and advice.

Hey Everyone,
I'm Melissa - I have always been interested in photography, just never really dedicated any time to it. I started out with a Sony Cybershot DSC-W7 and received a Canon S3 IS not too long ago as a gift. I've been playing around more with the manual controls and trying to take better shots, thinking more about composition and stuff. Perhaps after a little dedication to this hobby and getting better at it I can invest in a nice SLR...I was looking for one place to go to build on the skills I already have (or at least think I have, and the little I know).:D

I'm Maggie. I've actually had a Canon Rebel 300D since 2004, but it's only been this year that I've ventured off the little green box. Photoshop is my friend, but I would love to take better pics so I don't have to spend as much time tweeking the photos. Nature and my 8 year old niece are my two favorite subjects.

I've been posting here for about 3-4 weeks so I think it's about time I introduced myself. My name is Gary. I'm from Louisville, Kentucky, US. I'm about 1 year and 10 months from retirement and I just got bit by "the shutterbug". Photography for me will remain FOR ME. I used to play guitar and when I did it for a living, it became a drudgery and took the pleasure out of it. Same thing happened when I got into computers. Do it for a living and the joy disappears. ANYWAYS...I just sold the last of my stuff on eBay so I can take the course! :D I've got a Kodak Z612 -- the current in a progressive line of digicams that I've owned. I've had a digital camera since they were about a 320x200 resolution and 1MP was a status symbol. hehehe About 4 months ago a cousin picked up a Sony H7 and showed me a few of his photos. Mind you, he is no photographer but the shots were pretty darned good! The cameras I had up until then were nice. Nikon Coolpix 2100, Coolpix 4600, Sony somthing-or-other and I while I was "interested" in nice shots, I just put it on the back burner and used the cameras for less-than-mediocre vacation shots and some around-the-house "stuff". But, those photos my cousin snapped really made me pay attention. I started pricing "real" cameras on eBay and found that the big boys (Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc.) were out of my price range. I stumbled upon Flickr and noticed the picture quality of the Kodak line and was shocked to see they were really quite good. I'd always thought they were plastic lenses and junk. I got on eBay and picked up a Z740 for $57! It was pristine and took some excellent photos. Not being quite satisfied, I sold it on eBay for almost TWICE what I paid for it and picked up a Z650. Again, it just didn't do it for me and I sold IT on eBay for 20% more than I paid for it and got this Z612. In essence, I got the Z612 for $57. Not too shabby. I'm pretty much satisfied with it and will probably use it until prices come down on the Z812. It takes great photos but, I know I'm not using it to it's full capabilities and I'm not using ME to my fullest capabilities even though, a lot of my friends and acquaintances (2 of whom are professional photographers) say I missed my calling. Sooooo, I'm down for the course as soon as this last bidder pays me.

Whew! Long one! If you stuck with me this long, God love ya!

Gary, I just noticed that you are in Louisville, KY. I'm about 3 hours east of Louisville, in Huntington, WV. Good luck in your retirement.I'm approaching 60 in a couple of months but I'll be working until I'm 70 probably. I agree with you on making a hobby into a living. Computers used to be a hobby but now its work. I just want to play with them again.
I started this class about a month ago, and I'm glad I did. The instructors (Peter) is very good. He's helped me tremendously. I too like nature photos,it's going to be interesting to see what I can do this winter. The lesson on lighting is very good, especially if you go into detail. Good luck on the course.

Hi, neighbor! :D I'm looking forward to taking the course. I have one guy that I'm waiting for payment on from eBay then, I'm in!

I work for the State and thought I'd be working until I was 90 because of an ill-spent youth. But, since I slapped a nice chunk of my wages into some deferred comp for the time I've been here, I'm able to retire.

I'm happy to hear such good reports about the class. There's so many rip-offs it's difficult to discern the good guys from the jerks.

Happy snappin'!

Hello,
My name is Ingrid and I live with my retired husband Terry in a beautiful part of the world on a 3 acre property in Tropical North Queensland, Cairns, where the Rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. (Well until global warming will stuff it up)
We have 9 & a bit grandchildren + 2 great grandchildren.
We have lived most of our lives in Sydney and it was menopausal madness I fear that drove us to the tropical lifestyle.
As a retired midwife and only recently a B&B host/manager my interests have been diverted to all my old passions ie. art, photography, music and generally taking time out to smell the roses. A small sideline is multimedia productions, web design work and weather. We have our own weather station on our roof that updates world wide every 10 minutes. Yes, I know, someone has to be a little odd on this forum :)
So we shall meet and share many happy informative moments I hope.
Cheers for now.

Have also just signed up for the course. So mere male will be dragged out to do some field trips with me. Won't it be nice to share a hobby?

There are so many subjects to go out and shoot I sometimes can't decide which to go for first. I'm constantly trying to inprove my photography. I have some definate ideas of where I want to go with my work. I hope being here will help me to achieve my goals.

Welcome to the group, Ray. I envy your surroundings. My husband and I traveled to Long Island for a small day trip about 12 years ago. Our son graduated from Kings Point and we were out there for his graduation. We took a few extra days to sightsee and Long Island was one of the trips. We fell in love and would love to go back some day. Wouldn't give a second of my life to go back to New York but would love to visit Long Island for a longer time than a day. It was beautiful and you are correct, you have more photo opportunities in a day than I have in a year.

Hello everyone, I'm Trish from Livingston, Tx, and I'm also addicted to photography. A few months ago I had the pleasure and luck of flying to Greece for 2 1/2 weeks while my husband was stationed there, and I took so many pictures, but would love to have known how to take great pictures. I am looking forward to this class so that I can learn everything I can.

Welcome to the group, Trish. Would be really interested in seeing some of those photos of Greece. You will learn alot from these lessons and the group will be as helpful as they can. We are a lot quieter now, since Summer is here, but still check in ever so often.

Thanks for the welcome. I will be uploading some photos shortly of Greece, just remember all of these were taken in auto mode. But some still turned out great. I'm looking forward to learning all I can.

Hi guys'n gals

Nice to join you on the forum. Will be starting the classes in Oct 08 or thereabouts. :):)
Presently am taking classes at a local photoschool, but need to learn more (more! more!) I think this stuff touches your brain & you go a little bit wonky don't you think? At least it's so with me.
Anyway, I live in Tauranga in the North Island of New Zealand. It is winter here. No snow around, but plenty in other places. Ski bunnies can travel about an hour & a half. Fishing people love Tauranga, as do surfers, dolphin-swimmers, kayakers & any other waterbabies.
I have 6 children, all grown. 7 grandkids none of whom live in NZ. Boohoo. No children live in Tauranga & no rellies either - so have to scrape around for people shots. I find people pics are easily the hardest thing to do.
I also find thinking laterally (when it comes to pics) does not come easily, so tend to have unimaginative angles in shots - even if I have actually noticed good angles as I walk by. *sigh*
Lots more to say but it will keep OK?

Hello All,

I found this site by accident while browsing and thought I would join after looking around a bit. I'm not interested in taking any courses here simply because I'm already in a 35mm class at the local community college. My first semester is nearly over. The final exam is looming. It shouldn't be very difficult since it consists of turning in original photographs which I enjoy shooting. Developing, printing, mounting, and matting are all part of it.

In addition to the 35mm, I am an avid amateur freelance digital photographer and have been for quite some time, although I've had my Nikon D40x for less than two years. You'll rarely catch me without it and because of the 35mm class, I tend to carry as many as three cameras right now. It's a load!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to learning a few things in the forums. I'll see you there!

I am a newbie in here so be gentle ....
I held out buying an SLR for several years. I got up a Lumix FZ50 and it was great - I thought. But a year ago I joined the local Photography club and some of their pics made me feel like giving up.
So, I set a budget of $1000CAN and went E-baying.
I now have a Nikon D60 and a couple of lens's (Nikon 55-200 VR, Sigma 17-70 HSM) and I am ready to learn and grow .......
I like to photograph flora and fauna and close-ups (hence the Sigma 1:2.3 magnification - couldn't afford a 1:1 Macro).
I am going to sign up for the course soon.

So far this course is exactly what I was hoping it to be.... and maybe a little more. I am strictly a photo hobbiest, but have a passion for it. I love sunsets/sunrises,landscapes, animals and my favorite subject is my grandaughter and her horse (she is my very own little 'super-model')!
I live very close to the Mississippi River, in between Natchez, Miss. and Baton Rouge, LA... on the prison grounds of the infamous Louisiana State Pen at Angola. The prison grounds allows me some freedom to shoot old buildings, cemetaries and wildlife. It is a very old place est. in 1901. The local community is interesting too, I love Rural Decay!
Hope to get some feedback, friendly critique from my fellow students, as we all thrive on it!
Thank you all,

Hi there, Hazel! Welcome to the forums! I wish you the best of luck with the course and look forward to seeing some of your pictures soon! :)

As for choosing a DSLR, I can give this advice:

1) DO NOT be fooled by the megapixel game. Unless you're going to be making prints larger than 16 X 20 inches, you don't need more than 6 or 7 MP. Most DSLR cameras nowadays have at least 10, which will be far more than most people need. With that you can easily make perfect quality prints up to 30 X 20 inches. So don't fall for the salespeople's maneuvering and spend too much. Save that money for lenses.

2) Get a camera that feels good in your hands. If it doesn't feel good in your hands, chances are you won't want to use it much. Make sure the buttons and things are placed where they feel comfortable to you, in a way that you can adjust settings without even taking your eye away from the viewfinder. Missing a shot because you had look away from the viewfinder to change your settings is one of the most frustrating things that can happen if you buy a camera that doesn't feel good to hold in your hands and use.

3) Make sure your lenses are good, too. Some people forget all about that. I'd recommend getting at least one wide angle to mid-zoom, such as an 18-55mm, 18-70, 18-85mm, 18-105mm, or an 18-135mm. (DO NOT get all of these, of course!) Also, you should get one good quality telephoto, such as a 55-200mm, 70-200mm, or a 70-300mm. And definitely get a 50mm prime lens. They're among the cheapest around, yet if you learn how to use them properly they can produce absolutely stunning images. Be sure to look for ones that have a 'fixed minimum aperture'.

4) Do your research on both the camera you want and the lenses. Read reviews about each item, not just on shopping sites, but from noted reviewers around the internet, too. Ken Rockwell, Digital Photography Review, etc. are good ways to see if the item you want is worth it or not. If you don't understand the numbers and advanced terminology in the reviews, don't fret; go to the conclusion and read their final thoughts.

Sorry I kind of rambled for a bit there... :o If you need clarification on anything, please feel free to ask! :D

Hi, many thanks for the welcome and thanks to Elaine and Master PPV the advice on not falling for sales talk is really helpful. At the moment I use a Canon Powershot A630 (8 megapixels) I have been looking at reviews for the Canono EOS 1000D but there seems to be some confusion about the IS lens or non IS lens (which i really do not understand at the moment). But thanks to your advice I will go to the shop and have a feel of the camera for easy access to buttons etc. Thanks again.

Hello everyone. I'm Brandi from South Louisiana where the mudbugs are super and the hospitality is great! I first off want to say that I owe everything to God - He is the reason I have life - a life to see the potential in my surroundings. He has given me the opportunity to become a student at Proud Photography! Ok, so moving on.... I love my family - 4 kids, 2 dogs, and of course my husband. Photography is a desire for me, I desire to make moments last; those timeless moments - that is what I do, so I named my photography business - Timeless Moments.

God bless!

Hi, I'm Bernie and I'm just getting going on this course - lesson 3. I think it's going to be great to really learn about how to use my new camera. I bought a Sony A330 DSLR about three weeks ago and have already been really happy with what the shots I've gotten on the Auto setting, but it will be fun to learn how to really use it. I learned a little bit about composition in school but nothing about cameras really.
Hope everyone is having fun - I'm anxious to get out and start taking pictures!

Hi Helen,
Welcome to Proud, the course and the forums. It is great to have new members joining all the time.

If this is your first post in a forum, you are doing really well. I presume you have signed up for the 'On-line Photography course' which you will enjoy and learn lots. You can also learn lots by posting some of your pics in the Forums in Photo Critique Corner under the specific category. We all post our shots here for feedback from others, so if you would like some feedback on your shots, please post away, and ask as many questions as you wish.

Hello, my name is Jude. I have recently retired and my wife and I have begun to travel a little. We took our first trip abroad last November and I was a little disappointed in a large number of the photos that I took. I hope to improve the quality of the photos I take so on our next trip we have a few more memorable photographs.

I have been taking pictures since I was about 10 years old, but still consider my photos to be snapshots more that a good photo. I just signed up today and have completed the first lesson. I look forward to completing the course and receiving constructive feedback from fellow photographers.

Hi, Everyone!

My name is Steffanie. I am looking forward to the course and learning from all of you as well. I have been taking pictures for a number of years but have decided to get more serious and try to take better pictures
more consistently. I really enjoy nature and travel photography, as well as portraits. Oh, okay, I think I like almost all photography, but nature is my favorite.

Looking forward to visiting with all of you,

Stef
