I have heard from several others on forums about changing the standard picture style settings because the it is a little soft and needs to be sharper. While I understand this concept I still do not have enough experience to know what is a sharp picture...it still seems rather relative to what you are shooting to me. Can anyone help explain this better to me or let me know if they changed their settings and what the changes were and why?
Thanks for your time,
Mike

Concerning sharpening, if you shoot jpg, the camera will apply some auto sharpening and such to the image. If you shoot RAW, there is no auto sharpening or any other adjustments to the image. That's why when shooting RAW, there is always going to be some necessary post process work to be done. If you aren't getting the sharpening you expect with jpg, then you might look at other things that are hampering your sharpness like aperture, camera shake, shutter speed to name a few. It might be better to post an example of an imge you consider not sharp enough, alone with the camera settings and we can help you more.

Thanks Joseph,
I'm not sure if this will help but here is a shot I took last weekend of my daughters game. In the menu under "picture style", then "standard", you can make adjustments to sharpness, contrast, etc... what some have said on forums is that on the 40D, the sharpness should be adjusted higher because their standard setting is a little soft. Being that I don't fully comprehend what makes a truly sharp photo, I was wondering if I should change my settings or what I should look for when comparing.
On a separate note: Joseph, your participation and input on this forum is very helpful and appreciated. I
Mike

Mike,
Dont know what you mean about not sharp? IMHO looks pretty darn close to me. are you using manual setting or priority settings?
