I'm trying to figure if the pictures I took fit into the compositional rules.

3453
Photo #1 - Would this be considered a contrast?

3454
Photo #2 - Geometric?

3455
Photo #3 - Leading lines?

3456
Photo #4 - Rule of thirds.. or contrast?

3457
Photo #5 - Rule of thirds?

Any help or comments would be appreciated.
Thanks, Rose

Hi Rose,

I'm on the same lesson and struggling to find time to get the right pictures.

On number one I don't think this would fit into the contrast category. There is also a lot of noise in the photo. I think if there were all yellow leaves and one green or vice versa that it would be correct. It is also hard to make out the water drop with the busy background.

Number two I'm not sure what this would fit under but doesn't fit my understanding of geometric (again, I am on the same lesson so I could be wrong).

Number three, interesting perspective but I believe leading lines needs to lead to something which would be the true subject of the photo.

Number four, not sure about rule of thirds but this just doesn't "pop" or stand out for me. Maybe narrower DOF but the twig in front is distracting. For contrast, in my opinion, you would need to show more of the area to have the white bark really stand out.

Number five, the lines look angled or the horizon is off, which I'm sure you were doing on purpose to see from a different perspective, just not sure how that would work for the assignment.

I hope this is helpful to you. I keep going back and trying new ideas for my leading lines shot. So far, that has been the most difficult for me.

Good luck,

One thing to remember is that contrast doesn't necessarily mean color or technical contrast. It can also, and most often does when talking composition, mean contrast in subject. Like large/small, new/old, hairy/bald. Things of that nature.

Thanks everyone for your help. Is there anywhere on this site that explains what the compositional rules are? We are to do the lesson based on the rules.. but I can't find anywhere that the rules are explained.

Hi Rose. Yes the PP course certainly explains it in pretty good detail. If you are taking the course, and I assume you are because you are on lesson 5, then I would go back and re-read the lesson. Also you can search the net for rules on photography compositions. There's lots out there. But I would go back to the courses lessons first.

I did that. But the course skipped right over the lesson.. didn't think much of that until I tried to figure it out. It went right to the assignment with no explanation. Aurgh!! Now I see that there is supposed to be a lesson, I did complete the previous lesson too.

So you are saying that within lesson 5, there is no lesson there that explains rules of composition? Did you completely complete lesson 4? If I remember right, you can't go on to a new lesson unless you have completed the previous. I would go back to lesson 4 and see if there was something there that you may have missed like a question on a quiz or something. I can't remember what lesson 4 is right off hand.

I will try that.. I thought that I finished the lesson 4 Aperture. I even got a mark and submission feedback.

Well.. I did what you suggested, and guess what? I just followed the lessons back and it was all the way to lesson 2!! There was a lot more info than I thought that I had missed.

I've got the lesson 5 printed out and can understand more than before. Thanks, Rose

Thankfully this is all self-paced and we can just enjoy the process. After I turned in my last assignment I went back and practiced more using the critique from my advisor and feel like I learned a lot more that way.

Have fun with this and take your time.
