There is probably a better thread on this, but I am just wondering what editing software everyone uses or starts out with and goes onto and why?

Hi,
I started on one of the earlier versions of photoshop. I got it from my brother. I then managed to 'acquire' a copy of photoshop 7 which I used for a long time.
I recently purchased photoshop cs4 extended version, purely because I wanted the best on the market and from photoshop 7 that was a big step up.
I hear photoshop elements is a great place to start for anyone new to photo editing as it will probably cover everything you will need for photo editing. Although, there is a strong chance you will still want to upgrade to the full photoshop package. If you shoot in Raw you will need to look up to see if elements can read your raw files from your camera.
However, with photoshop you get pretty much all you will ever need and a whole lot more. its the industry standard and is a huge package.
A lot of people myself included also use Adobe Lightroom. This is another great package from Adobe although I have not played too much with it.
There is currently Lightroom 3 available as a free download because its still in Beta. I believe the beta version will disable itself around april time I thik I read.
Here is the link to Lightroom 3. Click Me! (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom3/)
You must how ever remember that it is still in Beta and maybe bugged. Also, I would only work on copied versions of your images with the beta and never your originals (Although I would also recommend this for any software not only beta versions either) as there may be a possibility it may damage your file.
Now. All products from Adobe are available as Trial version from their website. Check out photoshop and lightroom. They will give you 30 days trial I think it is.
And lastly you could always try the free open source editing program Gimp.
It is suppose to be the alternate for Photoshop although I have never used it.

Hope this helps you a bit? :)
