I've been taking back-yard sky photos off and on for around a year now, mostly with my ultracompact P&S (Canon SD600). I've just ordered a Nikon P5100 and, once it arrives, it'll be a whole new ballgame, I'll have access to manual controls.

I'd love to get people's comments on these shots, particularly ideas about how I can do a better job with this project once the new camera arrives. Thanks!

Very interesting.. have you considered joining these shots from different times of the day and seasons into a short movie sequence? I'd love to see that!

Thanks, I *have* thought of doing something like that (it'd even make the slide-show more interesting) ... but I think it would mean framing each photo pretty much identically, and the only way to do that would be to use a tripod and a 'dedicated' set-up. As it is now, I step out onto my deck, stand in more-or-less the same place, and shoot. This means there's lots of variation shot-to-shot.

I wish my back yard had sunsets like that! The only thing that bugs me are the two wires across each shot which tend to get in the way but unless you take a pair of snippers and cut them down (which I dont recommend) I guess there is no way around them really. Perhaps a touch up in photoshop or something similar?
