I agree, I prefer the colour version too.

Plenty of detail has been lost in the sky on BW version. See the white clouds. Be careful when adding more contrast. The land and water looks good in BW.

I too like the colour one best, what software did you use to convert it to b+w? The highlights have blown in the b+w version, other than that it is a nice shot:)

photoshop elements 5, plus a bit of messing with the contrast

Once you convert to black and white its best to use dodge and burn tools, you have a whole heap more control over what you are doing....are you UK? If so run down the shops and buy the November issue of Digital Camera magazine...it actually goes into dodging and burning...with pics too lol:cool:

I'm a Canon user myself...only cos it was a cheaper option...not that I am tight lol:D
Just the basic EOS350d, my fave lens at the moment is my Sigma 10-20mm....it is really good, you can get some mighty strange shots, I will post a pic I took of a horse close up..it is quite funny, will post it tomorrow as it needs resizing for the interweb thingy.

I much prefer the first photo in colour. The b&W version just seems to loose the punch of the shot. Especially the snow on the hills in the background.

As for the second shot although there are good lead in lines, I think the distance from the people and hut is too large, perhaps a little further along the pier and it would have been much better.

Just my thoughts, what do others think?

I popped into town yesterday and had a look for the mag but I picked up Digital Photographer. I take it, that is a different one to Digital Camera! :o

Oh well, All worth a read.

Definately the colour one, the B&W is a little to harsh to look at.

Do people think that B&W photography is a matter of Taste? I for one, prefer pictures to be in colour but a few pictures I have seen in B&W really apeal t me.
I'm not sure if it is just me and I prefer colour or if B&W only works in certain pictures. Some people seem to go way overboard with B&W but then again, to them, that may be what they like.

What do others think?
