I took this series yesterday of the neighborhood kids making the best of a frozen pond and a cold day. It was around noon with the sun bright and glaring so I
used a polarizing filter and set the camera in "Sport" mode. Very little editing
done other than some cropping and small adjustments for white balance.
It was my first attempt at using the p. filter. Sport mode set the ISO at 100, Aperture varied between f/ 3.8 to 4.5, speed varied from 1/550 to 1/640 with focal distance from 19 to 29 mm.

Thanks Elaine,

They are pretty safe out there on that ice as it was -10 degrees F. last p.m.
Next time I'll try to get some closer shots to see if they have frostbite!

Sandy - very nice series. Where are you located? Here in MN, we have pond hockey tournaments on one of the local lakes I think in February. Thousands from all over the world show up. But it is more fun watching kids.

Hi Debbie and Thanks!

Appreciate your nice comment. I'm in New England (VT.) and it would be hard to
imagine thousands of people watching pond hockey here, as this is a small
town of about 700 people (mostly in summer).....I think there might be some
teams further North in the Burlington area where the Lakes are......probably a good
photo op.!

Happy Winter there in MN. Will you be watching any of the tournaments?

Sandy - I must admit, I'm not a hockey person and so I don't think I'll be watching these tournaments. The last couple of years, the weather during the tournaments has been bitter cold and that's not a lot of fun. Here's a link:

Looks like it's in a couple of weeks.

My son plays pond hockey during the summer (in an indoor rink) and it's always a blast to watch. Of course, being Canadian, he plays league hockey all winter. :)

Debbie,
Thanks so much for the info on the tournaments......it has inspired me to find out more about the goings on in my area.....although I have not followed the sport,
I have great respect for the athleticism of hockey players, and I think it presents a great photographic challenge for practicing action shots as well....

Melanie,
Do you have any images of your son's games?

I do. I will try to find the time tonight when I'm home from work to post some. (none of pond hockey, but I've taken lots of league hockey)

Ahhh. Nice shots. Reminds me so much of when I was a kid playing pond hockey. I think my toes are still frozen 30 years later :)

Better to be flying around on the ice than standing still taking photos! I had to
retreat into the running heated car several times. Thanks for the look johnnya!
