Hey all,
Just wanted to share how exited I am and how I plan to put the Canon EF 16-35mm f/ 2.8L in my bag.

I want it for the ultra wide angle for:
weddings, portraits and landscapes. I have done the research and it was a toss up between this or the
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L

We all know the importance on quality glass, (either save for what you want or rent) I think it is wise what Jerry and Joseph suggested: "if you cant make up your mind, then rent the lense". I figured since I would spend half the $ on the f/4, perhaps I should wait and save more $ and spend the other half for the f/ 2.8.
My intent for this thread is to inspire someone to save for the equipment they really want. Dont settle for less and get someone elses opinion on if the cheaper will work for them IMHO. For some of us our collection of equipment does not just happen all at once. (always remember this may be for some of us a hobby.) It takes sometimes years to invest on what we really want, for some of us even longer! LOL.
I enjoy this site and enjoy learning from individuals way more talented than I.

Congrats to you Matt, you are going to love that lens. I have the 24-70 and wish at times I had something wider, but I don't.

For ca7696:

You will like this lens for sure, but a few things to remember: Don't plan on using a Teleconverter(TC) with this lens. There may be times that the 400mm end of things still won't get you close enough if you do wildlife and such, and you are tempted to by a TC to get you closer yet. TC work great if you don't fall below f5.6., but since the 1-400 is 5.6 at 400mm, and since the TC will take one stop of light, you are now at f8.0. The main problem is focusing. When you fall below 5.6, focus will be erratic and VERY unreliable. I bought one for the very lens and never use it because even in bright light, it will hunt to hit the focus and just isn't worth missing the shot.

One other thing with this lens is that even at 5.6, you will need very good light to get the shot exposed well. In normal cloudy situations for instance, you will have to increase ISO to 800 to get the right exposure most of the time, and then you will dealing with noise. What camera do you use?

Don't get me wrong, it is a very good lens and you will like it a lot, but there will be times when darker conditions will limit you, like a few hours after the sun comes up, and long before the sun goes down. BUT, when you have lots of sun, the lens shines.

Thanks ca7696 and joseph for the encouragement!
ca7696 you will not be sorry for purchasing Canon's L glass!
My next on my wish list will be the 100-400L as well. I had it once and was shocked when I found out the 1.4 Tc would not work (as mentioned by Joseph)So I worked out a trade and more $$ with my local camera shop on the 24-70 plus the 70-200.
But all in all the 100-400L is a wonderful piece of glass and I miss it!
