View Full Version : Got it. Now, How to organize it?
Hi guys,
Quick question. :) I got my new computer and am about to transfer photo's to this computer.
Question is, How do you all organize your photos?
By dates? Names?
Just trying to see the best way.
Currently I have them logged by dates.
Oh and Kaye, Thank you for judging the contest for me, In truth I forgot all about it but again, Thank you :)

Congrats on the new computer, that's exciting.
The first thing I do when transferring image to computer is to make a backup copy of the images. I then go through them and get rid of the obvious bad ones. I then rename them all to this format: 10000_021010
The first number is the photo number, and the second is the date they were taken. If I have different subject from the same shoot, I also put them in their own folder. I use to just keep everything from one shoot in one folder, but if you do a wildlife shoot for instance, and have any different animals in one folder, they tend to get lost. So if it's a bird shoot, every different bird will have it's own folder.
I use a folder for each calender year. Inside that years folder a series of shoot folders might look like this:
02-11-2010 Goldfinches at Lake Josephine
02-11-2010 Landscapes at Red Wing
02-14-2010 Eagles at Red Wing
and so on.
Inside each shoot folder is a "Best Edited" folder where I sift out the very best and put my edits to it. Each "best" image might 4/5 files associated with it. They might be: The RAW file untouched, the PSD file with layers, the final jpg in the largest possible size, and a small size final jpg for web use.
Hi Steve,
Not a problem judging your contest. I only saw it myself a day or so ago, so thought it would be good to keep the game going.
The links below were posted by admin not that long ago in External Resources - PP Blog.
I have not read them, but may be worth a read before commencing (particular the 2nd part).

Myself, I have a folder for each year eg. PHOTOS 2010.
Within that folder I have subfolders - eg. Animals, Birds, Portraits, Macro, Landscape, etc. etc. (Sometimes I may name a subfolder in the name of the Event or Outing or Place where I took the shots, depending upon the type of shots).
All these folders as you would know can be viewed in date order, name order or date amended, etc.
I just read Joseph's thread, and I also have a folder within say the Animals folder named "Edits completed" (or something similar meaning my best shots in that field).
I am sure everyone has there own methods, but most of the time I can find a particular shot that I am looking for!
