It has been a while, but thought I would upload another shot, trying out my hand with B&W. I seem to struggle with the concept of B&W!

I think this is an awesome B/W image, Jon. I, too, struggle with B/W images and have gotten stuck on my B/W lesson on the course. I've submitted two images and have failed miserably with both of them. Thus, I'm stuck, cause I LOVE B/W and want to be able to take them and I won't move on until I can accomplish it.

I love the tones of this image with the stormy sky behind. Great shot!

Incredible subject, I would love to see it in real life myself. :) Good job on the shot too but I think it could be improved with a little more contrast or increasing the intensity of the blacks a touch.

What aspect specifically are you getting stuck on, Mary?

Thanks Jerry, it is appreciated. I will try again with the contrast. When you say increase the intensity of the blacks, what do you mean and how would you do it? Apologies if this is a stupid question!

Jon this is such a cool shot. Very interesting and well composed. I like what you did in regards to the B&W conversion. I think this would be considered a wall hanger. Thanks for sharing it.

In Lightroom, just pull the contrast and/or the Blacks slider over a little more. In Photoshop, play with the curves a little.

Thats kinda how I meant it. :)

Jon, this is a magnificent image. I love it in B&W, but did you happen to take a colour shot of it as well. Would love to see it if you did.

Yowza. That looks like something from a sci-fi nightmare, Jon. The Ladybower Black Hole. Great shot. Almost looks like a touch of HDR.

Hi Jerry....I'm beginning to think I can't 'see' in B/W....as my images all come out blah. I've submitted two images and only got a 70% on both of them. I can't settle for that so have stopped till I can get it handled. I'm not a portrait shooter, so don't care to go the people route and have been trying to do it with landscapes and architecture. I'll keep trying...I'll get it some day.

Thanks Pat, yes, it was 3 shots merged together using photomatrix and then converted to B&W with Silver Efex Pro.

Thanks Kaye.
As mentioned in the above post, it was 3 images combined together, but to get an idea here is the middle image (no exposure compensation).

Jon, still looks beautiful to me without the merged images. I think it has the more "natural" look to it, but I know nothing about B&W.

I would perhaps think that this shot shows more of what your eye really saw on the day ??

Hi Jon, well you could knock me over and out with a feather with this shot, absolutely amazing.
This is such a strange sight considering its surroundings. I think both your HDRi and non-version are incredible.
